The Cato Institute seeks qualified candidates for a full-time position located in Washington, DC as a General Counsel. This is a unique role that will have the ability to impact the organization on a fundamental level. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to limited government and individual liberty.You will oversee and advise on all legal issues facing the Institute, and have primary responsibility for monitoring and ensuring compliance with all relevant legal, governance, tax and other requirements. You will examine and draft IT, employment, and vendor contracts, manage copyrights and trademarks, and oversee corporate governance, the development and maintenance of relevant organizational policies, and the preservation of business records. You will also establish the prudence of defending lawsuits and prosecuting as appropriate. You will work closely with the Chief of Staff to provide strategic guidance and make recommendations on employment-related issues. When appropriate, you may also interact with the Institute's Board of Directors.The ideal candidate will have sound knowledge and understanding of applicable laws and regulations, and the ability to make judicious legal decisions. You should have general counsel experience, and a strong understanding of employment law. Top candidates will be team players with exceptional advocacy and people skills.
