This position is located in the Capital Building, Mason Section. In this role, the primary responsibilities are providing supervision and coordination for construction and renovation projects as well as maintenance and repair service requests.

Tour of Duty: Monday thru Friday, 2:00 a.m to 10:30 a.m.

This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Superintendent Capitol, Superintendent, Capitol Building, Assistant Superintendent CB and CVC Operations and Maintenance Division, Maintenance Branch, Masonry Section. The incumbent serves as Masonry Section Assistant Supervisor and provides supervision and coordination for service request, construction and renovation projects maintenance and repair. The incumbent is a working Assistant supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Serves as a working Assistant Supervisor. Performs administrative and technical supervisory functions for subordinates. Assigns duties and evaluates employees' performance. Resolves complaints and grievances as delegated by higher level supervisors. Provides leadership to ensure support for equal employment opportunity (EEO) goals and requirements. Provides for employee skills enrichment through job related coaching, mentoring, and training.

Establishes project priorities, develops work plans, and schedules sequence for tasks to accomplish alteration, renovation, and construction projects. Inspects work in progress to ensure work is accomplished according to specifications and plans.

In the absence of the supervisor, prepares cost estimates from drawings, blueprints or site inspections for proposed or anticipated construction projects and alterations. Maintains computerized work orders, logbooks, material inventories, cost estimates, material take offs, inventory sheets, blueprints, and drawings. Requisitions supplies, materials, and tools.

Masonry Project

Performs complex and intricate masonry work in the interior spaces of the Capitol Building and CVC. Repairs, maintains, and erects stone, brick, concrete, and concrete block. Uses hand and power tools, such as brick or concrete Skilsaw to cut and shape brick. Uses chisels, hammers and other fabrication tool and equipment to cut and shape stone. Uses tools such as cement mixers, caulking guns, chisels, core boring machines, drills, electric hammers, floats, grinders, hammers, jack hammers, levels, masonry saws, plumbs, power washers, terrazzo finishing machines, squares, trowels, rakes, and shovels to perform work.

Oversees the cutting, polishing, cleaning, and matching of a wide variety of stone used. These include types of marble, granite, and limestone.

Maintains and repairs interior and exterior masonry surfaces and appurtenances, including base, columns, curbs, decks, fountains, pads, partition walls, partitions, pools, stairs, steps, structural slabs, and ramps.

Sets stone and other types of building materials on walls and partitions. Polishes, cuts, cleans, and matches a variety of bluestone, granite, limestone, marble, and sandstone. Lays block and brick. Sets, lays, polishes, and repairs tile and terrazzo. Cuts openings in walls and finishes exposed surfaces.

Cleans masonry surfaces using chemicals or high pressure power washers. Installs waterproof membranes in fountains, pools, and showers. Installs ceramic tiles. Pours and finishes concrete pads and decks.

Identifies the types of stone used and differentiates among the grades and finishes to ascertain the country of origin or the quarry of origin. Uses this information to document materials used and their origin for display purposes.

Sorts stone by size and shape and cuts, shapes, finishes, and lays it to ensure long term endurance and appearance.

Uses specialized techniques to fasten brick or terra cotta veneer to structure faces. Uses tie wire or anchor holes as appropriate.

Responsible for utilizing a thorough knowledge of and compliance with all OSHA safety rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner and to initiate or take corrective action on unsafe conditions in managed areas. Provides or receives training, either on the job or through classroom training, to ensure that all direct reports know how to use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Routinely checks to verify that subordinates are using all required PPE.
