Summary

Joining the Secret Service, Office of Strategic Intelligence and Information, as a special agent will allow you to perform critical protective intelligence assignments. The special agent position salary is $99,172 (GS-13, step 1), to $128,920 (GS-13, step 10). For more information on the Secret Service click here .

This position is covered by Law Enforcement Availability Pay (LEAP) which is an additional compensation of 25% of the base salary will be added to locality pay.

Responsibilities

We are looking for talented and focused retired Criminal Investigators to assist with unprecedented operational tempo and travel. Criminal Investigators will carry out assignments in protective intelligence and may be temporarily assigned to duty stations throughout the U.S. and other countries. Duties include:
  • Supporting protective operations for various protectees and protected venues by conducting protective intelligence assessments and investigations during both foreign and domestic visits. This will include assignments related to National Special Security Events.
  • Coordinating protective intelligence assessments and investigations across the Secret Service.

Conditions of Employment you will be required to:
  • Submit to a drug test prior to your appointment and random drug testing while you occupy the position.
  • Disclose any prior drug use, attempted use, and/or experimentation.
  • Carry and use a firearm. Maintaining firearm proficiency is mandatory. You will be ineligible to occupy this position if at any time you have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, unless you received a pardon or your conviction was expunged or set aside.
  • Completion of a Reemployed Annuitant Reintegration Course to be held in the National Capitol Region or an abbreviated U.S. Secret Service special agent training course.
  • Certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so, if you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959.
  • Individuals who retired under CSRS or FERS law enforcement special provisions may not be re-hired to a primary/rigorous position after the age of 60. (If hired before the age of 60, the individual can be kept on the rolls after that age. (5 CFR 831.809, CSRS and FERS Handbook, Chapter 100 at Section 100A1.1-2 and Section 100B1.1-1).


Qualifications

You qualify for the GS-13 level (starting salary $99,172) if you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level, which is in or directly related to coordinating difficult and complex protection assignments or staff assignment including but not limited to: covering designated security post at official functions/events and restricting secure areas to authorized personnel; as assigned, keeping in close proximity to designated protectee and taking any measure required to protect his/her life; providing protection while on travel with a protectee; supporting protective operations by interviewing unauthorized individuals attempting to gain access to secure areas to determine whether a security threat exists; and writing associated reports.

National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience) Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

In addition to meeting the basic eligibility criteria, ICTAP applicants must be well qualified for the position. Well-qualified is defined as having knowledge, skills, and abilities that clearly exceed the minimum qualification requirements for the position. Education

General Medical Requirements:

As determined by the Office of Personnel Management, the duties of this position require moderate to arduous physical exertion involving walking and standing, use of firearms, and exposure to inclement weather. Manual dexterity with comparatively free motion of fingers, wrist, elbows, shoulders, hips and knee joints is required. Arms, hands, legs and feet must function sufficiently in order for applicants to perform the duties satisfactorily.

Since the duties of this position are exacting and involve the responsibility for the safety of others under trying conditions, applicants must possess emotional and mental stability. Any condition that would hinder full, efficient performance of the duties of this position or that would cause the individual to be a hazard to himself/herself or to others is disqualifying.

There are also specific medical requirements for this position, and any chronic disease or condition affecting the respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, digestive, nervous, endocrine, lymphatic, nervous, genitourinary, and other systems that would impair full performance of the duties of the positon may also be disqualifying.
