About the Position: This Public Safety Dispatcher position is located at the Directorate of Emergency Services (DES) Police/Provost Marshal Division, Fort Myer, VA. It is within easy driving distance of Washington, D.C., national historical sites and parks. You can find shopping, schools, and churches in the area.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and evaluate 9-1-1 emergency calls.
  • Provide assistance to callers with medical emergencies, to include Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), emergency childbirth, clearing obstructions of and opening airways, and controlling bleeding.
  • Dispatch emergency response units, such as, police, fire and emergency medical personnel and equipment.
  • Operate and maintain all Dispatch Call Center equipment, such as National Fire Incident Report System (NFIRS), Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD) System, radios, telephone, and station alert systems.
  • Prepare and maintain reports and records relating to emergency responses.
  • Perform routine administrative and miscellaneous clerical duties.

  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled.
  • This position requires the incumbent to possess, obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain the following certifications within 6 months of employment: (1) Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) Operator OR (2) a National Law Enforcement Telecommunications Systems (NLTES).
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain the following certification within 6 months of employment: American Heart Association Healthcare Provider for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain the following certification within 6 months of employment: Emergency Medical Dispatching Certification from either Power Phone OR Auxiliary Power Unit (APU).
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain the following certifications within 6 months of employment: (1) Advance Fire Services Dispatching, (2) Advance Police Services Dispatching, and (3) Non-Emergency Call Handling.
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain the following certifications within 6 months of employment: (1) Domestic Violence Intervention, (2) Suicide Intervention, and (3) 9-1-1 Liability.
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain the following certifications within 6 months of employment: (1) Hazardous Materials Preparedness for Dispatchers, and (2) Advance Public Safety Dispatching.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear a uniform.
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain computer skills are map reading skills.


Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience which includes answering 9-1-1 calls; dispatching appropriate equipment/personnel; perform intervention with distraught emergency callers during high risk situations until appropriate emergency response units arrive on the scene, and monitor computerized dispatch and fire alarm systems.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of the work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service (GS-05).
