Summary

Serves as an Engineering Technician Project Leader in the Fabrication Technology Development Branch, responsible for providing technical support for the utilization of an extensive range of materials and innovative processing for the instrumentation and development of test articles.

Responsibilities

  • Provides technical support for the development, installation, modification and integration of complex electronic and mechanical systems for unique aerospace and research instrumentation applications.
  • Provides a variety of technical and administrative support for enabling the development and fabrication of mission-critical hardware for dynamic high-impact projects.
  • Designs and develops experimental research instruments, devices, or system components for projects with undefined or uncertain performance requirements, incomplete or conflicting data, techniques or components.
  • Fabricates and develops test hardware which are primarily one-of-a-kind items requiring material selections, process identification, and non-destructive evaluations upon completion.
  • Analyzes the task, selects appropriate work processes and sequences required, estimates cost and establishes realistic completion schedules.
  • Develops quality assurance and inspection plans and assures the preparation of detailed information for procurement packages.
  • Designs and documents novel test procedures, evaluates test results and makes needed design adjustments.
  • Leads the team in identifying, distributing, and balancing workload among employees; arranging for team member training; and monitors and reports on the status and progress of work.
  • Reports to the team on progress in meeting team milestones and deadlines for completion of assignments.

Qualifications

Applicant must have one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade, which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

Specialized experience is defined as professional working experience that included the following:

-Experience in pressure and temperature instrumentation of metallic and non-metallic models and test articles, brazing and soldering technology, materials processing, and polymeric application on aeronautic and space rated equipment and hardware and is considered a specialist/expert in instrumentation and polymeric application technology.

-Knowledge and skill in design and composite fabrication processes including but not limited to applications specific to wind tunnel testing, support of research in laboratory environments, and construction of pressure/thermocouple probes and rakes, pressure transducers, and thermocouple materials.

-Knowledge of instrumentation design processes and standard engineering practices covering a wide range of fabrication technology enabling effective consultation with scientists and engineers to advice, counsel, and determine solutions to successfully achieve aerospace research objectives.

-Experience with design and fabrication processes including but not limited to applications specific to wind tunnel testing, support of research in laboratory environments, and construction of pressure/thermocouple probes and rakes, pressure transducers, and thermocouple materials.

-Knowledge of metals, braze alloys and solders, non-metallic materials and their characteristics including strength and cure possesses, heat treatment, metallurgy, machinability, and surface finishes.

-Experience with advanced composite design and manufacture processing.

-Knowledge of advanced composite materials and their characteristics including strength, cure processes, machinability, and surface finishes.
