The Division of Safety and Security aims to provide a safe and secure campus for all members of the university community through best-in-class technological and physical infrastructure, proactive assessment and analysis, and a caring team of professionals dedicated to upholding the university’s values with the highest degree of conscientiousness.

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Health & Safety, the Industrial Hygienist is responsible for assessing health risks within the workplace, which include chemical and biological laboratories, research facilities, and a school of art. The Industrial Hygienist will develop strategies to promote a safe environment and enhance the health and well-being of students, faculty, and staff. The core responsibilities of this role are to conduct investigations, provide comprehensive and in-depth reports, and make recommendations to improve environmental quality. The incumbent will respond to and investigate incidents as assigned.

Primary responsibilities include:

• Develops, recommends and implements procedures, policies and approaches related to environmental and occupational health safety and risk management at the University.
• Acts as subject matter expert (SME) when called upon to represent the university in investigations, complaints, and regulatory compliance.
• Researches evaluate and interpret safety standards and building codes established by the District of Columbia, Commonwealth of Virginia, and the federal government that affect the University.
• Manages and conducts occupational and environmental health and safety awareness training programs, seminars, and orientation training to benefit students, faculty, and University staff.
• Conducts detailed investigations of all campus accidents and incidents that involve safety violations and possible safety problems.
• Manages the inspection of University physical facilities and safety systems to identify and classify potential problems; oversees the University’s regulatory compliance; prepares written status reports, and recommends corrective actions as necessary.
• Counsels and advises lab researchers, department heads, and other University personnel on occupational and environmental health safety matters as assigned.
• Communicates with outside local and/or government agencies on matters related to occupational and environmental health safety.
• Maintains a current awareness of issues and technology related to environmental and occupational health safety and risk management by attending seminars/workshops and reviewing published literature.
• Maintains a comprehensive understanding of OSHA, EPA and other federal and local safety and health regulations.
• Participates as assigned in crisis management training, exercises, and post-incident reviews as a member of the Division of Safety and Security.
• Develops strategies to reduce and eliminate health and wellness risks within the campus environment. This can range from relatively simple changes such as improved air filtration and ventilation; to more intensive solutions such as mold and asbestos removal.
• Develops, implements, and administers effective loss prevention initiatives and programs for preventing injuries, occupational illnesses, any motorized device/vehicular collisions, liabilities, and property damage.
• Responsible for coordinating and aligning safe campus operation processes, identifying dangers in the workplace and campus environment. This includes coordinating corrective action plans and programs.
• Assists in the planning, scheduling, and training of staff, faculty and students; and conducts audits of the effectiveness of university industrial safety policies.
• Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position. 

Minimum Qualifications 

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 3 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
