This position is in the Food Economics Division of the Economics Research Service located in Washington, DC

Research Mathematical Statistician have open-ended promotion potential. Research accomplishments & their impact on the duties & responsibilities of positions are evaluated periodically. The grade level is limited only by the individual's demonstrated ability to perform research of recognized importance to science & technology. Final grade level may be determined by a peer review panel

Responsibilities

  • Maintain current intelligence on mathematical statistics and survey methods for collecting and producing high-quality data pertinent to supporting the needed research by external and internal users.
  • Develop and improves methods used in collecting and estimating high-quality data that support the most important current food policy questions facing the nation.
  • Responsible for methodological studies that drive both the development and assessment of the collected data, and for efficient and effective dissemination of the data and resulting studies on ERS website.
  • Uphold the OMB directives and best practices, as reflected in ERS? Data Review Policy, to make both restricted and public-use data and documentation available to authorized users and the general public, respectively.
  • Publish ERS reports and provides briefings to USDA officials.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

BASIC REQUIREMENT
A. Degree: that includes 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience: at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

Qualifying experience for GS-13 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-12 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience- Conceiving, formulating research, and producing publications as the primary author that are of interest and value to the field of mathematical statistics;- Developing products in the identified field of research that solve important scientific problems; and- Presenting information to professional societies on technical matters and practices in the field of mathematical statistics.

Qualifying experience for GS-14 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-13 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is- Primary authorship of publications, products, or techniques that are of considerable interest and value to the field of mathematical statistics;- Selecting to serve on important committees and review panels of technical groups and professional organizations; and- Consultation by users and other researchers who are respected in their fields of study.

Qualifying experience for GS-15 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-14 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is- Primary authorship of a number of important papers, inventions, designs, models, theories, and/or techniques that impact the advancement of mathematical statistics;- Recognition by the scientific community as an authority in the field; and- Experience participating in symposia that define the state of the discipline or introduce new areas in the field.
