Summary

The physician shall provide primary care services at the Washington DC VA Medical Center or at the associated Community Based Out Patient clinics (CBOCs). All labor and services shall be provided including management, supervision, teaching, consultations and reports. Care shall be appropriately documented in the electronic medical record in accordance with standard community practice.

Responsibilities

  • The Primary Care physician's actual clinical activity shall be a function of the VAMC Executive Committee of the Medical Staff clinical privileging process and the overall demand for emergency services.
  • Provides direct hands-on patient care. Assesses patients for acute illnesses and determine whether patients need to be admitted to the hospital or managed in the outpatient setting. Manages chronic disease.
  • Provides clinical guidance over the phone, by Secure Messaging and through the mail. Ensures accurate documentation of medical assessments and observations.
  • Responsible for supervising and teaching medical residents and students. May be required to oversee mid-level practitioners, such as nurse practitioners or physician assistants.
  • Establishes inter-personal and intra-departmental relationships to enhance optimal patient care.
  • Demonstrates competent and effective oral and written communication.
  • Provides appropriate patient/family member teaching and education; evaluates effectiveness and level of patient/family member understanding of teaching provider.
  • Utilizes the CPRS computer software/program for entering and signing of medical orders such as laboratory studies, radiological studies, etc.
  • Maintains familiarity and compliance with hospital infection prevention policies and procedures, ensuring the use of antiseptic methods of all in-clinic procedures.
  • Ensures a safe work environment and employee safe work habits.
  • The provider shall make referrals to subspecialists when their expertise is needed for diagnoses, treatments or procedures. The provider shall inform patients of the required referral or consult.
  • Relationships with management, co-workers, patients, and the general public must be consistently courteous, respectful, and cooperative in nature.
  • Must display a cooperative attitude and effectively work together to affect the organization?s mission and goals.
  • Ensure productivity is maintained at the established level for the program for which he/she is responsible.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/18/2019.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting, 15-44 pounds; Light carrying, under 15 pounds; Use of fingers; Walking, 2 hours; Standing, 2 hours; Work closely with others; and Work alone.

Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP): Authorized

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursement program within VHA. If selected for this position you must meet specific individual eligibility criteria in accordance with VHA policy 1021 and apply for EDRP within four (4) months of appointment. Final award amount and program start date is determined after review of a complete EDRP application and supporting documentation by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office. Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of 26 days per leave year (1 day per pay period).
