The ideal candidate selected for this position will support the Director of Risk, Insurance & 3 rd Party Liability through innovative leadership and technical claim oversight as follows:
  • Supervise technical and/or administrative employees as assigned by the Director of Risk, Insurance & 3 rd Party Liability
  • Handle complex, high visibility claims as needed
  • Serve as liaison with the Office of General Counsel for all claims in litigation, including periodic litigation meetings on new items
  • Develop and deliver relevant training sessions to enhance technical claim handling skills for the team
  • Be proficient working within a RMIS (Risk Management Information System)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Risk Management or related field

  • Minimum four (4) years of casualty claims adjusting to include two (2) years' experience supervising casualty claims

  • Required to operate a WMATA owned motor vehicle(s) or equipment (revenue or non-revenue ) which requires the possession of a Driver's License from the incumbent's jurisdiction of residence

  • Associate in Claims (AIC) or similar certification

Job Summary

The Supervisor, Claims is responsible for staff supervision and professional/technical claims oversight, monitoring, evaluation, and liaison work, as prioritized by the Director, Risk, Insurance Policies & 3rd Party Liability. This position directly supervises technical (Claims Adjusters) and administrative (Claim Assistant, Claim Technician, Receptionist) employees as designated by the Director, Risk, Insurance Policies & 3rd Party Liability. The incumbent provides technical guidance to the staff of Claims Adjusters to promote proactive determinations of liability and damage evaluations, along with disposition plans to close claims. The incumbent may serve in an acting capacity for the Director, Risk Insurance Policies & 3rd Party Liability during absences.

Essential Functions
  • Supervises subordinate staff to include assigning duties, directing and evaluating work, assisting assigned adjusters in negotiating and approving settlements, implementing disciplinary actions and resolving grievances, approving leave requests and time sheets, and providing appropriate subordinate training to ensure fair and reasonable settlements with third party claimants who allege bodily injury and/or property damage caused by WMATA's negligence and to ensure recovery of the cost of repair or replacement of WMATA property caused by the negligence of third parties.
  • Communicates statistical claim activity and status (including recoveries) to RISK staff and upper management to demonstrate the effectiveness of the 3 rd Party Liability unit.
  • Conducts performance appraisals and performs administrative personnel duties for assigned staff to ensure performance objectives are being met
  • Maintains statistical and reserve accuracy and credibility in the Risk Management Information System (RMIS) utilized by the Authority to ensure accurate financial reporting in the Authority's general ledger.
  • Assists the Director, Risk, Insurance & 3rd Party Liability in updating the TPL Operations Manual to support keeping the TPL Operations Manual current.
