Job Announcement

Zoning Administration Division, Department of Planning and Development. Reviews and processes sign permit applications and works with applicants to correct application deficiencies. Reviews and processes noise waiver requests in coordination with local communities and elected officials. Provides verbal and written responses to Zoning Ordinance questions, as received from the public, other County and/or State agencies, or elected officials. Conducts Zoning inspections and writes inspection reports at the request of county staff. Reads and interprets technical documents, such as sign permit graphics, site plans, subdivision plans, and plats. Serves as a zoning resource planner. Provides review comments to other planners within the department regarding proposed comprehensive sign plans, photometric plans, special permit or special exception applications, noise studies, or other assignments involving land use, zoning, environmental planning, public facilities, and/or information technology

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of the principles of urban planning and zoning;
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and interpret documents relating to land use, zoning, environmental planning, public facilities, and information technology;
  • Ability to write, proofread, edit, and rewrite documents effectively and to produce accurate final documents;
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate land use and development plans and to form sound, practical recommendations;
  • Ability to use a computer to access, create, enter, and retrieve information, to conduct research, and to perform basic word processing and spreadsheet operations;
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers, elected and appointed officials, development representatives, and citizens;
  • Ability to speak effectively before individuals, citizen groups and public bodies;
  • Ability to assume progressively increased responsibility for assignments;
  • Ability to manage time, competing assignments, and deadlines effectively and to apply consistently sound judgment.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: graduation from an accredited, four-year college or university in a planning-related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Professional experience in review and approval of planning, zoning, building, site or other types of permits. Experience using a personal computer, word processing applications, and Geographical Information System (GIS) based programs. Strong abilities in written and oral communications.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
A valid driver's license
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Is required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Duties performed with or without reasonable accommodation. Position is primarily sedentary. However, employee may be required to do some walking, standing, bending and carrying of items up to 10 pounds in weight. Work requires the ability to operate keyboard-driven equipment and make occasional site visits. Ability to drive a vehicle to sites in order to perform field inspections.
