Summary

You will serve as a MAINTENANCE MECHANIC in the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT of NAVAL FAC ENGINEERING CMD WASH.

Responsibilities

  • You will assemble items using joining techniques (e.g., miters, rabbets, dados, biscuits, mortises) to secure wood pieces, veneers, and counter tops.
  • You will perform carpentry work (e.g., replace broken screens, sheeting, rafters, beams) to repair and replace structures.
  • You will install accessory materials (e.g. gravel stops, gutters, flashings, vent jackets) to complete roofing installation and maintenance.
  • You will perform roofing work using tools (e.g., include hammers, hand saws, scrapers, spades, shingle cutter, metal snips) for completion of projects.
  • You will perform roofing work (e.g., lay tile, slate composition, derbigum, sheet metal, grave roofing) to complete maintenance projects.
  • You will construct or repair building structures (e.g., walls, roofs, floors, partitions, panels, cabinets, bookcases) using wood, cement block, or metal.
  • You will use joining techniques (e.g., miters, rabbets, dados, biscuit, mortise and tenon) to assemble items.
  • You will use trade mathematics to layout rafters, steps, arcs, circles, and tangents for a project.
  • You will interpret guidelines (e.g., blueprints, diagrams, sketches, technical specifications) to complete facilities maintenance and repair work (e.g., roofing, painting, woodcraft, carpentry, structural).
  • You will use sketches, work orders, blueprints, and instructions to accomplish carpentry work.
  • You will work from drawings, manuals, technical directives, and instructions to determine sequence and methods of fabricating or installing structures and equipment.
  • You will follow established safety procedures and practices when using hand and power equipment.
  • You will operate portable power tools (e.g., drills, routers, nail guns, electric hammers, skill saws, portable table saws, circular saws, sanders, joiners) for woodworking and carpentry jobs.
  • You will operate precision carpentry and woodworking equipment to produce finished products with precise fits, accurate dimensions, and acceptable appearance.
  • You will use tools and equipment to perform maintenance and repair of utilities, appliances, building structures, and associated equipment.
  • You will use hand tools, power tools, or stationary shop equipment to perform woodworking or carpentry work.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: I have the ability to perform common tasks including: 1) Tracing leaks, pinpointing the leak area, and removing old roofing to get to the source of leak; 2) Determining, planning, and laying out the work to be done from sketches and blueprints; 3) Constructing or repairing a wide variety of structural items such as building frames, rafters, concrete forms, wall, staircase, door and window frames, interior and exterior trim, and miscellaneous items such as work benches, counter tops, bookcases, equipment cabinets, computer consoles, and items requiring limited decorative trim and molding; 4) Interpreting work orders, oral instructions, or maintenance complaints, and accomplishing assigned tasks following established work procedures and accepted trade practices and clean work environment. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.

Working Conditions: Incumbent works on ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and where parts of the system may be in hard-to-reach places. This requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in uncomfortable positions. Work will progress through all weather conditions and it is the responsibility of the incumbent to work effectively and safely during these times.

Physical Effort: Physical effort is moderate to heavy and includes prolonged standing, climbing ladders and scaffolds, working in cramped and awkward positions, lifting and bending while using hand and power tools. Position requires frequent lifting, carrying, and setting up of tools, and equipment and parts that may weigh over 50 pounds. Weight lifted does not usually exceed 50 pounds; however, incumbent may be required to have other employees assist if lifting more than 50 pounds.

Other Statements: The incumbent is required to obtain and maintain eligibility for a valid state driver's license and if required, a local government license to operate a government vehicle to report to various job sites. A valid state or government driver's license may be required for continued employment. Must be able to work overtime as required, as callback and emergency overtime are regular requirements of the position. The incumbent will be required to become familiar with specific and unique Supported Command technical mission requirements.
