Responsibilities

Provide assistance with mail screening, preparation and distribution for the Mail & Distribution Group. Routes, transports, and delivers mail to and from Department of Commerce Headquarters and counterparts. Sorts and delivers incoming and intra-institute mail. Processes mail for Federal Express and Post Office Express, in addition to preparing mail to be sent registered, certified, insured, and delivery confirmation. Responsible for independently processing a full range of substantive and specialized support actions under general review, selecting from varied alternatives and devising procedural steps when necessary. Functions may include examining and reporting on the contents of documents, while adjusting accounts, databases, or similar systems. Pull and push mail carts, lifting packages and mailbags weighing up to 40 pounds. Uses PC locator system, classifies and meters outgoing mail, x-ray and screen incoming mail. Additionally, the incumbent may be tasked to provide clerical support, such as word processing, maintaining databases, filing, answering phones, and reads general mail requesting information and determine proper routing. Act as back-up to the mail transporter.

Qualifications

Selective Placement Factor:

Ability to drive vehicles weighing less than 26,000 lbs, as evidenced by a current valid state driver's license (Copy of license should be provided with application.)

Specialized Experience:

Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the the GS-04 level (ZS-II at NIST). Specialized experience is defined as experience working in a mailroom setting that included duties such as processing mail for distribution, delivering mail to various locations, and providing detailed information on distribution policies, procedures and schedules.

OR

4 years above high school.

OR

An equivalent combination of experience and/or post-high school education.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This position allows you to qualify and be considered based on your education.
