Summary

About the Position: This position is located in the infectious Disease Clinic with other Infection Control nurses. Office is shared with other Infection preventionists. Weekday hours. Multidisciplinary interaction, impacting Defense Health Agency (DHA) policy and Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) impact. The work requires walking long distances as well extended periods of standing, bending and heavy lifting. Preferred Infection Control Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Perform professional duties relevant to infection control aspects of blood-borne pathogens and other infectious diseases.
  • Evaluate and design infection control interventions to meet facility mission and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Utilize epidemiologic principles and practices to observe, investigate and implement control measures throughout the medical treatment facility (MTF).
  • Evaluate outbreak and/or cluster of infection investigations.
  • Identify surveillance tracking, analyze data, report and brief board of directors on healthcare-associated infections.
  • Serve as consultant and resource person to regional clinic personnel and subject matter expert regarding current infection control matters and policies.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • Two year trial/probationary period may be required.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual season influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempt for medical or religious reasons.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires the incumbent to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Preferred Infection Control Certification.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for a Nurse (Consultant/Infection Control):

Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate's degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Experience: At least one or more full years of professional nursing experience performing duties involving the implementation of infection prevention and control principles in a healthcare setting; completing infection control risk assessments; providing infection control education AND possession of a graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate's degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11)

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
