This is a position within school nutrition assigned to work in a school cafeteria for up to 20 hours per week. An employee in this class is responsible for assisting in the preparation and serving of food, and in the cleaning of kitchen equipment and facilities. This employee receives on-the-job training in the basics of offs preparation and the cafeteria operation. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of a school nutrition manager or the other supervisor.


The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed in relation to the position. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate:
• Prepares all foods associated with a daily menu.
• Operates commercial kitchen equipment.
• Sets up cold and hot serving lines.
• Serves meals to the students, facility and staff in a pleasant manner.
• Performs the responsibilities of a cashier, including accepting payment, and operating cash registers, scanners, and other electronics;
• Receives shipments and places in the appropriate storage spaces.
• Attends job related training classes and workshops.


• High School Diploma or GED required
• Knowledge of food service methods and practices, including proper food safety and sanitation procedures
• Knowledge of commercial kitchen equipment preferred
• Ability to read and interpret standardized recipes and other technical documents
• Work requires excellent customer relations skills
• Ability to perform varied food service work including food preparation, serving, clean up
• Ability to perform basic math and cashiering
• Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and customers and work cooperatively with others

The following provides a brief description of physical requirements for this position:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or tools; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to see, talk and hear. The employee is regularly required to sit; walk; stoop, kneel, crouch or bend and may be required to lift up to approximately 40 pounds. May be exposed to extreme temperatures.

Pay Scale: Banded Rates
Band: 1 $13.25 per hour
