An Overview

The Alexandria Police Department is looking for a few qualified individuals for a rewarding part time opportunity to connect with the community and provide safety to our smallest citizens. This is a great opportunity for individuals with flexible schedules including students, the stay at home parent and retirees. Each applicant should work well with children. To be a member of this dedicated team, one must be willing and able to work in all types of inclement weather conditions and have reliable transportation. The position requires some flexibility because periodically there may be a need to respond to emergency schedule changes. The crossing guard must be open and available to work any assigned school post.

What you should bring
The ideal candidate should have the willingness to work in adverse conditions, such as rain, heat and cold. A candidate should be able to understand and apply the rules of the road while crossing pedestrians through intersections and at cross-walks. This will also require the candidate to stand on his or her feet for approximately one-hour. The candidate should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and be courtesy with colleagues and the public.

The Opportunity
  • Controls and directs traffic at crossings to allow children to cross safely
  • Instructs children in the safe and correct way to cross streets and in ways to identify a potential traffic hazard
  • Maintains discipline of children, ensuring conformance with traffic and crossing regulations
  • Learns the location and purpose of street traffic signs within assigned patrol areas
  • Reports unsafe behavior of children to school officials
  • Gives school children and other persons directions and information
  • Report traffic signals out of order, accidents, traffic violations and other hazardous conditions
  • Uniforms clean and neat with all necessary issued equipment to accommodate weather
  • Perform related work as required

Minimum & Additional Requirements

High School Diploma or GED; one year of experience working with children; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to follow instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with staff and the public. Must be able to be at school posts on time. Have the ability to exercise mature and alert judgment. Have the ability to be stern but tactful; Courteous and respectful with the public, particularly with school aged children. Have some knowledge of traffic laws.

Notes

  1. This position will have a MAXIMUM of 15 hours per week Monday-Friday and hours will vary by school.
  2. This position requires the successful completion of pre-employment testing to include: criminal records checks (Federal and Local) background check and drug screen.
