Fairfax Water has an immediate opening for a Distribution Engineer I/II. This position will perform engineering work associated with the operation and maintenance of a complex water transmission and distribution system. 

Essential functions include:

  • Supervising and administering the Fairfax Water Cross Control Program and Backflow Prevention Program by overseeing the duties and responsibilities of the Cross Connection Control Program Coordinator.
  • Monitoring various system operations to understand, evaluate, and optimize system operational control strategies.
  • Providing technical support to other staff, including supervisors, distribution operators, maintenance personnel, systems control engineers and planning engineers, as appropriate.
  • Utilizing computer models to analyze system operations and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Assisting with the review of proposals and the selection of outside consultants.
  • Preparing maps, records, electronic data, reports, and recommendations on system operation and maintenance activities.


Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or closely related field.  Certification as an Engineering in Training (EIT), or the ability to obtain within one year.  Candidate should have a knowledge of engineering and scientific concepts, theories, principles, practices, procedures, and analytical techniques.  Candidate should also have a working knowledge of public water supply production, treatment, and distribution.
