Summary

This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Hampton VA Medical Center (VAMC), Hampton, VA. in the Maintenance and Repair Section of Engineering Service.

Responsibilities

Performs extensive control work such as checking, adjusting, installing, and modifying electronic, electric, and pneumatic controls as necessary to maintain proper control, which requires extensive knowledge of system design and operation. Required to maintain, install, hook up, modify design parameters, write computer programs and put into operation all types of A/C systems, and to operate and repair refrigeration and air conditioning equipment by using the Johnson Controls Building Automation System (BAS), Alert on Building Automation System (BAS), and Automated Logic Controls, Must be able to recognize the causes of faulty equipment and be able to make necessary repairs, and modifications to achieve desired operations, if necessary. Diagnoses trouble or defects in sensors, field cabinets, control consoles, electronic control boards in motor control centers, and determines corrective action.

Disconnects and dismantles electronic controlled instruments as necessary and corrects trouble or defects by adjusting, repairing, or replacing parts or units. Works with electrical circuits from 240 volts to 24 volts and other lower voltage signals such as 0-10VDC and
4-20ma

Required to maintain the Johnson Controls, Alert on, and Automated Logic Controls Building Automation systems operating correctly. Performs the above duties with little or no supervision during the regular administrative work week and may occasionally be assigned to a shift during a personnel shortage of A/C plant operators and A/C equipment mechanics. Subject to call back for emergency repairs of equipment. Should have the capability of troubleshooting data base problems from a remote location with the use of a personal computer and modem hook-up. Incumbent may support other utilities shops as need arises.

Must possess a thorough knowledge of A/C and refrigeration systems, as well as design and operation characteristics of various systems such as chilled water, hot water and steam, for control of environmental conditions.

Must have knowledge of the practical application of electronics theories.

Must have knowledge of the principles of air conditioning.

Must be able to modify, alter, or change components of the system which are malfunctioning and to modify programs and add points to the system to further increase the reliability and economic operation of the control systems involved.

Must have a thorough knowledge of graphics design for BAS and be able to create and modify the control graphics to make the operation of the system more efficient and easier for various operators to understand.

Must have a thorough working knowledge of multimeters and in working with AC/DC circuits.

Must be skilled in interpreting engineering drawings.

Must have a good working knowledge of fractions, decimals, and principles of
mathematics.

Must be skilled in electrical troubleshooting as well as be able to adjust and calibrate all safety controls and operating controls to specifications.

Performs scheduled preventive maintenance in accordance with VA and manufacturers' requirements and repairs and installs equipment. Thoroughness and quality of work performed is such that equipment failures are not due to neglected or inadequate preventive maintenance.

Analyzes current preventative maintenance procedures and equipment requirements to determine need for modification or improvement. Devises appropriate new preventive maintenance procedures and makes effective recommendations for the reduction of downtime or to improve equipment reliability or accuracy.

Must interpret work orders, specifications, technical literature, and blueprints for repairs, installations, and modifications in order to determine the best methods of accomplishing work, with a minimum of instructions concerning the work methods or the materials needed for the job at hand.

Must complete work without undue interruption to the work assignments, and only consults with supervisor on problems which are unique. Evaluates these problems and makes recommendations on how to repair, modify, or eliminate problems out of the control systems.

Physical Effort. Daily duties consist of climbing, working in cramped positions, and restricted spaces, and moving and lifting heavy objects and equipment in the repairing and installation of A/C equipment. In making repairs and installations, works from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms. Equipment is located in hard-to-reach places and stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling are frequently performed for long periods of time in making repairs.

Working Conditions. Work is primarily performed indoors, in draft attic spaces and in cramped areas with low overheads, and the incumbent is frequently required to work outside. Incumbent is subject to varying extremes of weather and temperature variations. Incumbent is subject to dusty atmospheres, cuts, and bruises, electrical shocks, falls from ladders or scaffolding, eye and hand injuries from power driven machines and hand tools, and to communicable diseases while working on the wards. Incumbent may be subject to escaping gases when working with, around, or near refrigerants.

Other. Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license. Will also be required to be fitted for a respirator which may prohibit the growth of facial hair.
