Summary

Seeking a motivated, highly skilled sonographer with expertise in M-mode and cross-sectional echocardiography, and continuous pulsed wave Doppler Echocardiography techniques, and also color flow imaging of the heart. If you have the ability use independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative in the application of non invasive high frequency ultrasonic waves to the human body to diagnose cardiac disease we NEED you to provide your expertise in caring for Americas truest heroes, our Veterans.

Responsibilities

  • Skilled in the proper placement and use of various transducers in the performance of echocardiograph studies;
  • Required to have an understanding of the proper patient positioning and utilize that knowledge for optimum image acquisition;
  • Assist with training other staff, student technologists, resident physicians and medical students in the cross-sectional anatomy;
  • Perform the transesophageal echocardiography according to established policy and procedure outlined in prescribed SOPs;
  • Understands that dobutamine is a synthetic sympathomimetic amine which increased heart rate and contractility;
  • Assist with inventory control of supplies, equipment calibration and coordination of preventive maintenance program;
  • Selects proper echo;
  • All other duties and tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-27. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

1. Ability to produce diagnostic quality images and Doppler frequency shift recordings using M-mode, two-dimensional, pulsed and continuous wave Doppler spectral display, and colorflow Doppler imaging.

2. Knowledge of normal echocardiographic findings and deviations produced by a wide variety of cardiovascular diseases.

3. Ability to perform complex procedures such as cardiac studies of the four chambers of the heart and valves using sector scanning techniques to detect stenotic and incompetent valves, chamber enlargement, and pericardial effusion and cardiovascular studies deriving pressure gradients across obstructed valves, etc.

4. Ability to perform complementary ultrasonic examinations (including noninvasive) transthoracic, Bubble studies and contrast echocardiography, (invasive) stress echocardiography, and transesophageal echocardiography.

5. Ability to adapt transducer positioning, instrument controls, and examination techniques to the individual patient being studied and the problem being evaluated including recognizing pertinent abnormalities and documenting abnormal findings.

Physical Requirements: Lifting/carrying - 45 lbs or more, Standing, Sitting, Walking, Kneeling, Bending/Stooping, Twisting, Pushing/pulling, Both legs required, Simple grasping, Use of fingers, Both hands required, Fine manipulation (includes keyboarding), Reaching above shoulders, Near vision correctable at 13-16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, Far vision correction in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other eye, Ability to distinguish basic colors, Ability to distinguish shades of colors, Hearing whispered voice (with or without aid), Emotional/mental stability, Walking on slippery or uneven walking surfaces, Working with hands in water, Working closely with others, and Protracted or irregular hours of work.
This is a Fee-Basis position. It is on an intermittent basis and does not have benefits.
