This position is located in the Department of Labor, Office of the Secretary of Labor, and serves as a Law Clerk for the Employees' Compensation Appeals Board. The Board is an independent quasi-judicial body with exclusive authority to consider and decide appeals within its area of jurisdiction.

This program is available to recent law students who: (1) Will graduate between May 2018 and May 2019; or (2) Are current Judicial Law Clerks whose clerkship will conclude prior to October 1, 2019


Reviewing legal pleadings, medical evidence, hearing transcripts, and other materials in conjunction with the facts and law of each case;

Preparing a large volume of high-quality draft decisions and orders following an examination of case records in FECA claims;

Proof-reading all written materials for accuracy of factual findings, legal citations and conclusions of law;

Conducting legal research on questions arising from states, regulations, decisions, legislative history, policy guides, and other legal authorities; and

Providing assistance to the Board by preparing updates, regarding recent decisions of the Board and statures, regulations, and policy guides.

Conditions of Employment

Minimum Qualification Requirement: This position requires completion of a first professional law degree (LL.B or J.D.)

Appointments as a Law Clerk are limited to 14 months during which time appointee must be admitted in good standing to the bar of a court of general jurisdiction of a state, territory or possession of the United States and may be appointed to a term appointment as an Attorney-Advisor.

Applicants should possess significant academic achievement(i.e., GPA of 3.5 or higher) and/or legal or programmatic work experience as described in a least one of the areas below:
  • Graduated with academic honors
  • High Academic Achievement (graduated top 25% of class)
  • Law Journal or other relevant writing experience
  • Moot court completion, legal aid, or legal clinic experience
  • Judicial Law Clerk experience
  • Significant summer law office clerk experience


A LL.B or J.D. is a requirement for this position. 4. Ability to multi-task in a complex and fast-paced inter-disciplinary legal environment.
