Summary

About the Position: This Firefighter (Intermediate Life Support), GS-0081-08 position with the Directorate of Emergency Services is located at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia. This is a term position not to exceed five (5) years.

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic and intermediate life support treatment to patients within a pre-hospital environment.
  • Perform patient assessment and intervention to include circulatory assessment.
  • Conduct and interpret electrocardiograms (EKGs) in accordance with local protocol.
  • Direct fire and emergency medical personnel when responding to medical emergencies to provide care for the sick and injured.
  • Perform CPR and advanced airways techniques.
  • Make appropriate decisions relative to firefighting and rescue operations in order to preserve life, property and the environment.
  • Perform fire inspections, maintenance and testing of extinguishing systems and portable extinguishers.
  • Respond to structural, brush and forest fires.
  • Respond to medical emergencies and hazardous materials incidents.
  • Respond to aircraft and vehicle emergencies.
  • Work as a member of a fire fighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the employee to possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • Must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.5M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position
  • This position requires an annual physical agility test.
  • This position requires the employee to work 72 hours a week on a 48 on 72 off basis, which includes weekends and holidays and may be subject to recall after normal tour of duty in cases of emergencies.
  • This position requires the employee to wear uniform and/or protective clothing weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • This position requires approval to practice as an EMT-Intermediate or higher by the Rappahannock Emergency Medical Services (REMS) Operational Medical Doctor (OMD) in the REMS region.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes responding to alarms and combats fires utilizing knowledge of the proper firefighting and rescue techniques; operating alarm room equipment (e.g., multi-channel radio console, computer systems, telephone systems, recording systems, etc.) and fire reporting devices; participating in training exercises (i.e., classroom and practical); containing and controlling toxic, hazardous and/or dangerous materials; performing inspections for fire hazards in areas such as, quarters, administrative buildings, barracks, warehouses, industrial shops, places of public assembly, and outside storage areas. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Selective Placement Factor: Emergency Medical Technician Certification (Intermediate or higher level), Driver Operator Pumper, Firefighter I/Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials Awareness AND Hazardous Materials Operations OR Hazardous Materials Technician, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications.

  • Maximum Entry Age: (a) For initial appointments, you cannot have reached your 37th birthday by the day of appointment. (b) If you have passed the designated entry age limit noted, but have previously served in a covered position you may be eligible to re-enter the fire service provided that you: 1) meet all applicable qualifications for the position; and 2) will be able to complete a total of 20 years of covered and creditable federal firefighter service by the time the federal firefighter reaches the age of 57. Prior service in covered positions and credit towards retirement may be subtracted from your age to determine if the federal firefighter meets the maximum entry age.
  • This position may be converted to permanent career or career-conditional appointment without further competition as long as all requirements are met. To be eligible for conversion, employee must complete at least 2 years of current continuous service under a term appointment in the competitive service AND employee must have a current performance rating under such term appointment of at least fully successful or equivalent.
  • A recruitment incentive bonus of up to 25% may be paid to new hires who will be newly appointed to the federal government, subject to management approval.
