Summary

The Civil Division, U.S. Department of Justice, is seeking a paralegal to work directly with attorneys on fast-paced, high-profile litigation. The successful candidate will work side-by-side with a team of attorneys and paralegals on headline-making cases. Must sign Pathways Program Participant Agreement.

Responsibilities

As a Paralegal Specialist (Recent Graduate) GS-0950-7/9 your typical work assignments may include the following:
  • Conducting research, writing and drafting documents, and organizing as related to legal services
  • Analyzing factual data, preparing exhibits, preparing case statements
  • Performing advanced research into factual aspects of assigned cases
  • Assisting senior staff attorneys in preparing pleading or briefs
  • Handling correspondence and potential conflict between client agencies and attorneys' goals
  • Assisting attorneys in conducting interviews with investigative resources
  • Managing, tracking, and organizing case information
  • Reading and developing synopses and timelines of evidence
  • Analyzing testimony and depositions and prepare summaries

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements by 09/13/2019 to participate in this Recent Graduate Program:

A. Completed all requirements for an associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational, or technical degree or certificate with a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or above from an accredited educational institution within the two years preceding the closing date of this announcement,
09/13/2019
OR

B. Released or discharged from active duty within the previous two years by 09/13/2019, where as a veteran who, due to a military service obligation, was precluded from applying to the Recent Graduate Program during any portion of the 2-year eligibility period following completion of degree or certificate requirements with a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or above, are entitled to a full 2-year period of eligibility upon release or discharge from active duty. In no event, however, may the eligibility period extend beyond 6 years from the date on which the preference eligible veteran completed the requirements of the degree or certificate.

NOTE: You must submit transcripts or official documentation, to verify Recent Graduate Program eligibility. Transcripts MUST reflect the degree/certificate program and the degree conferred date (Official transcript is required upon selection).

In addition to the eligibility requirements for the Pathways Recent Graduate Program, you must also meet the followings qualification requirements by 09/13/2019 in order to qualify for the Paralegal Specialist, 0950, at GS- 7 or at the GS-9.

GS-7

To qualify for the GS-07 position,

A. Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service or comparable pay band system related to the work of this position conducting research, writing and drafting documents, and organizing information as it related to legal services;

OR

B. One year of graduate level study, or possess a master's or higher degree, e.g., LL.B., J.D., LL.M., Ph.D, in related to the position being filled from an accredited college and/or university. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study.

OR

C. Have a combination of experience as described in "A" above and education as described in "B" above. Have a combination of graduate education and experience, as described above that meets 100% of the requirements. To determine the combination of education and experience, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the total percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify. (NOTE: You must provide a copy of your transcripts).

GS-09

To qualify for the GS-9 position
A. Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal service or comparable pay band system related to the work of this position, assisting senior staff attorneys in preparing pleading or briefs, performs tasks analyzing factual data, preparing exhibits, preparing statements of case, and performing basic research into factual aspects of assigned cases

OR

B. 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.

C. A Bachelor's degree in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled, plus at least one of the following superior academic achievement provisions:

1. A grade-point average (GPA) of B (3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale) for all completed undergraduate courses, or courses completed in the last two years of undergraduate curriculum; or

2. A grade-point average (GPA) of B+ (3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale) for the required courses in your major field of study, or required courses in your major completed in the last two years of undergraduate study.
