Job Announcement

Performs skilled, journeyman level mechanical work, plumbing work, fixtures and valves throughout the pumping stations and McMath Facility. Work shall include, wastewater sludge, hydraulic, air water and chemical lines, performs work on a variety of odor control systems including chemical and carbon to ensure continuous operation of the odor system, troubleshoots and determines equipment problem in order to repair, replace, rebuild or rehabilitate. Performs minor electrical work such as disconnection of wire leads from motors, and/or checking voltage with a voltmeter. Performs corrective and maintenance on pumps up to 600 HP, standby generator, to include starters, water pumps, pre-heaters, etc. Replaces bearings on motors up to 600 HP. Performs maintenance and repair on various types of specialized machinery located in waste pumping stations including pumps, electric motors, blowers, gasoline and diesel engines, generators, air compressors, sewage grinders, trash grinders and other screening and repairs to include the use of shop tools and equipment grinders, drill press, general power tools and hydraulic pulling equipment, acetylene and cutting torches, performs work using precision measurement tools such as micrometer, dial indicator and torque wrench.

Assists identifying of parts required from the equipment diagrams, repair parts lists, and secure repairs parts in order to make necessary repairs or replacement of machinery. Performs location and marking of force-mains. Performance of duties is carried out following all safety procedures at times, this work must be carried out under adverse weather conditions.

Safety Responsibility: Engages in safe working practices and complies with Wastewater safety programs and guidelines. Complies with the DPWES Safety Competencies.

Emergency Service Personnel Designation: Wastewater Management positions are responsible for providing uninterrupted sewer service to residents during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies. This position may be designated as emergency service personnel at any time by the DPWES Director or Division Director. As such, this position is subject to 24-hour on-call and may be required to report to work during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies, including after-hours and weekend work during emergency incidents to fulfill emergency service duties. You must make every reasonable effort to be accessible for communication. During unscheduled leave or administrative leave declarations by the County Executive, emergency service personnel are required to report for work.

Employment Standards

Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to the following: graduation from high school, or a GED issued by a state department of education, or completion of a registered apprenticeship program and three years of experience in the maintenance and repair of pumps, motors and other wastewater equipment.

Welding experience, experience in methods, tools and testing equipment used by mechanics in the repair or overhaul and preventive maintenance of automotive types of gasoline and diesel engine. Experience diagnosing and tracing hard to locate defects or problems and initiating corrective action. Ability to make independent judgments and decisions within the framework of oral and written instructions, procedures and accepted trade practices.

A valid driver's license.

Frequent exposure to loud noises and rare exposure to airborne substances, routine climbing. Ability to distinguish colors. Has to enter confined spaces with a weight restriction of 310 pounds.

Subject to 24 hour call back and must, therefore, be able to work emergency overtime. Subject to working in adverse weather conditions and may be exposed to raw waste or environments generating methane gas.
