Senior Residential Counselor

An Overview
The Safe Haven Senior Residential Counselor (SRC) manages the day to day facility operation, maintenance, staffing and regulatory compliance of the Safe Haven program. The Senior Residential Counselor provides supervision, guidance, assistance, and training to the Residential Counselors and the Custodian.

What You Should Bring
The Senior Residential Counselor (SRC) will have paid experience providing services to adults who are homeless and who may also have a serious mental illness or co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse disorders. The SRC will have a good understanding of consumer values, empowerment, and individuals who have self-determination and have some knowledge of peer support, WRAP, integrated treatment for individuals who have a serious mental illness and/or co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse disorders; excellent knowledge of large household coordination and maintenance; and excellent knowledge of the nature of mental illness and the role of residential support services.

The Opportunity
  • Manages recruitment, screens, interviews, and makes recommendations for hire of residential staff;
  • Provides new staff orientation, training and ensures required trainings/certifications are maintained;
  • Provides clinical and administrative supervision to residential counselors to ensure appropriateness and quality of services and care is provided and documented regularly;
  • Completes performance appraisals;
  • Meets with residential staff for both individual and group supervision;
  • Facilitates staff meetings;
  • Manages scheduling of the residential staff to ensure use the Safe Haven program has 24/7 coverage;
  • Assigns and monitors workloads to ensure effective use of staff resources. Participate in short and long-range planning related to program needs and staff requirements;
  • May perform as substitute residential counselor during emergencies or periods of short staffing;
  • Ensures the Safe Haven program meets all applicable licensure standards and maintains current City and Department policies and procedures;
  • Assists with individual service planning and case management activities incoordination with the Senior Therapist at Safe Haven;
  • Reviews and signs time sheets, approves and monitors overtime use;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

About the Department
The Center for Adult Services (CAS) provides programs and services in Aging; Adult Protective Services; Clinical & Emergency Services; and Community & Residential Support Services for seniors and for persons with mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance use disorders. CAS provides compassionate and effective person-centered services based on best practices. Our teams support self-determination, safety and recovery for Alexandria residents affected by abuse, neglect, mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance abuse disorders.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Two-Year College Degree; two years' experience working with clients with intellectual disabilities, mental illness, Substance Abuse Disorder or domestic violence in a residential setting and supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities; Must have a valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

Currently licensed as a Qualified Mental Health Professional - Adults; At least two years of supervisory experience; Bachelor's degree in a Human Services field; Some experience working in a Housing First residential program, which includes managing residential programs for homeless adults with a serious mental illness or co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse disorder.

This position requires the successful completion of pre-employment background checks including but not limited to: FBI/Federal Records Check; VA State Child Abuse/Neglect Registry; Medicare/Medicaid Fraud Database; education/certifications; and driver's license.

Schedule:
Monday through Friday, 9:00AM to 5:30PM with some flexibility for evenings, weekends, overnights and holidays, as needed. As an Essential Employee, staff will be expected to be at work during weekends, holidays, or inclement weather if they have been scheduled.
