Job Description:

The Dance Programming department's mission is to provide the highest caliber experience for all presented and produced dance companies and events at the Kennedy Center, in keeping with an expectation of the nation's performing arts center.

The Coordinator within the Dance Programming team is responsible for the logistical management of the Kennedy Center's Ballet and Dance seasons. The Coordinator is responsible for developing and managing schedules, travel, and itineraries to include all audience engagement events. They manage the supernumerary program and auditions. This person must collaborate with visiting artists and various Center departments in order to realize successful presenting engagements. The Coordinator must maintain relationships with local hotels, travel agents, and members of other departments at The Kennedy Center in order to meet the needs of visiting companies.

The Coordinator also provides support to the Managers of Dance Programming in the presentations of annual programs through Damian Woetzel's DEMO series and presentations on Millennium Stage to include National Dance Day and the Local Dance Commissioning Project.

The position requires presence and availability whenever artists are at the Kennedy Center in order to provide the necessary support and level of hospitality that is expected by the world-class artists that visit the Center. The Coordinator also manages the day to day operations of the Dance Programming office and other duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

80% Act as primary liaison between visiting artists and various departments of the Center for the Center's Ballet and Dance series. Coordinator, in collaboration with department Managers and as a member of the Dance programming team, is responsible for all logistics necessary for the presentation of the Kennedy Center's Ballet and Dance seasons; to include the arrangement of hotels, transportation, meals, visas, fee payments, supernumerary performers, playbills, tickets, and matters of hospitality when needed. Attend performances as a representative of Dance Programming. Maintains contact with production managers, orchestra manager, education coordinators, press representative, advertising and marketing personnel, special events coordinators, and theater managers in order to ensure the flow of information between these departments and visiting artists. Works with relevant parties to develop schedules, establish needs, review promotional materials, and organize events.

10% Coordinate audition, rehearsal, and performance needs for supernumeraries in presentations of ballet companies as needed.

5% Manage the day to day administrative responsibilities of Dance Programming office, to include paying bills, ordering office supplies, and assisting/instructing department interns.

5% Additional projects as assigned.

N/A Responds to the needs and requests of Kennedy Center management and staff in a professional and expedient manner, and adheres to all employer policies and procedures.

Key Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in the arts, arts management, or equivalent experience.
  • Basic understanding of performing arts, performing arts administration, and production; a background in dance and/or the field of presenting preferred.
  • 1-3 years administrative experience, working in an office environment, required.
  • Production experience, working on a theatrical or dance production, highly preferred.
  • Computer literacy, including experience with Microsoft Word and Excel in a PC environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and comfort working with nationally and internationally renowned artists.
  • Resourcefulness, excellent problem-solving skills, ability to prioritize multiple tasks, attention to detail, and the ability to remain calm in tense circumstances.


Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate in person and on the telephone. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel in order to operate computer keyboard, office equipment, and other essential tasks. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, crouch, and reach with hands and arms. This position infrequently lifts, carries, or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment:

The noise level in the work environment is generally quiet, with conversations happening at speaking voice.

Weekend and evening hours are required, and will be arranged in advance.

Travel may be required.
