Assistant Superintendent of Street Cleaning

An Overview
An Assistant Superintendent of Street Cleaning supervises a group of Labor Supervisors, Heavy Equipment Operators, Equipment Operators I and II, and Laborers, who are assigned to perform general street cleaning work. Employees in this class assist their supervisors by ensuring City streets and right-of-ways are kept clean of trash, dirt and debris. These positions function independently with only general supervision. Employees in these positions are supervised by the Superintendent/Street Cleaning and also receive assignments from the Division Chief/Public Works Services. The candidate will also fill in for the Maintenance Assistant Superintendent when needed. Work is reviewed through reports and results obtained.

The Opportunity
  • Hires, trains, reviews, and evaluates employees' performance;
  • Investigates and recommends recommendations in cases of accidents, resident property damage and liability claims;
  • Coordinates special refuse disposal and collection and street cleaning requests, i.e., private parking lots or areas to be policed for trash and paper as requested from citizens or private concerns located within the City of Alexandria;
  • Receives complaints or requests for service either in person or by telephone and resolves or follows up on resolution;
  • Coordinates various types of refuse disposal, collection, and street cleaning done within the City, and determines the proper equipment to utilize to resolve the problem, i.e., oil spills, loose gravel, or glass in the street;
  • Compiles daily, weekly, monthly, and annual reports;
  • Reviews safety, accident, and disciplinary reports and recommends action to be taken;
  • Ensures that vehicle operators have valid Commercial Driver's Licenses (CDLs) and that safety equipment is utilized, such as fire extinguishers, safety shoes, gloves, and eye protection;
  • Supervises alternate shift and all crews in absence of Superintendent of Street Cleaning, and performs duties of Labor Supervisor when required
  • Prepares bills of materials, estimates and other written reports, verifies contractor invoices;
  • Performs related work as required.


The Ideal Candidate
To qualify for this position, all candidates must possess Five years of experience as an Equipment Operator II or Heavy Equipment Operator in refuse collection and disposal maintenance or street cleaning and completion of high school courses or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Employees in this class must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), issued by the state of the employee's residence, with the proper endorsement for the vehicle being driven within three (3) months of appointment.

To be considered as an ideal candidate, one should also possess Two-Year College degree/Associates degree; four years of solid waste management experience, and three years of lead supervisory experience. Knowledge of Street Maintenance is also preferred. The candidate must have the ability to operate heavy equipment in support of street cleaning or maintenance operations.
