The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's role is to oversee various aspects of the energy industry, including transmission of electricity, natural gas and oil. We also analyze proposals to build liquefied natural gas terminals and interstate natural gas pipelines and license hydropower projects. To help support the modernization of the electric system here in the U.S., we are focusing on issues associated with a smarter grid.

This position is located in the Office of Enforcement - Division of Analytics and Surveillance. The Office of Enforcement serves the public interest by ensuring effective regulations and protecting customers through understanding markets and their regulation, timely identifying and remedying market problems, assuring compliance with Commission rules and regulations, and detecting and crafting remedies to address market manipulation and other non-compliance issues.

Major Duties for the position:

- Directs staff in performing quantitative analysis of available information relating to natural gas markets to review and monitor complex market structures, conduct, and performance.

- Uses a comprehensive understanding of trading practices, risk assessment, and relevant market tools together with an expert knowledge of current market issues to direct staff in assessing market behavior and compliance with Commission rules.

- Possesses an expert knowledge of energy market dynamics and industry practices, a mastery of analytic and evaluative methods including quantitative approaches, an in-depth understanding of data management, and an overall expert knowledge of market conditions, trends, and developments.

- Has an expert understanding of current and possible future market characteristics in order to forecast future activity and identify potential and actual problems.

- Performs work individually, as a team member, a team leader, or supervisor, and is able to perform multiple projects concurrently, in a different capacity on each.

- Directs staff and participates in policy initiatives precipitated by market participant behavior.

- Develops guidance for branch members to meet the particular requirements of individual projects/studies. Trains and mentors staff by providing: technical advice; assistance in analyzing complex statistical, economic, or market-related data; and, assistance in resolving issues stemming from the surveillance of market participant activities. Prepares training materials and/or serves as an instructor for staff training initiatives.

- Coordinates work performed by personnel from other branches, divisions, and offices. Ensures that work products conform to office policies and procedures, are technically correct, and timely.
