The Frederick National Laboratory is dedicated to improving human health through discovery and innovation in the biomedical sciences, focusing on cancer, AIDS, and emerging infectious diseases. Position Overview: PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Facilities Maintenance and Engineering (FME) Directorate is responsible for laboratory space, administrative space, infrastructure, campus landscape, planning, and design, and construction management at Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES Checks schematic diagrams and equipment manuals to isolate causes of instrument malfunctions Checks electronic alignment of instruments according to calibrating standards using electronic testing equipment Disassembles and replaces components such as vacuum tubes, thermocouples, transistors, etc. Redesigns existing circuits to meet special requirements Modifies equipment for miniaturization and efficiency of operation Periodically inspects instruments and support systems Conducts standard tests on newly installed support systems Assists in maintaining reserve essential components This position is subject to 24-hour call in (rotating schedule) for emergency repairs BASIC QUALIFICATIONS Possession of high school diploma or equivalent plus one (1) year of vocational or manufacturers' instruction in electronic industrial instrumentation and pneumatic controls In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of six (6) years of craft-related experience Diagnose and repair malfunctions on a wide variety of electronic, pneumatic, electrical and mechanical instruments Experience reading/comprehending electrical schematics and blueprints Experience with precision electronic testing equipment Ability to perform physical duties including routinely lifting and carrying up to and exceeding 50lbs Duties include walking, standing, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, working in confined areas, potential exposure to particulates, vapors or noisy environment Must have and maintain a valid State Driver's License issued by the state in which the incumbent/candidate resides for each class of vehicle to be operated on company business Must have no more than 3 demerit points in the previous twelve (12) months or five (5) demerit points in the preceding thirty-six (36) months per policy Knowledge of safety practices in the trade Position is subject to 24 hour call-in for emergency repairs Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS) Experience with Blue Mountain software Experience with GMP maintenance and calibration Knowledge or or experience with a wide variety of complex electronic controls, sensory and recording systems used in research JOB HAZARDS Candidate will be entering an animal facility or have the potential for exposure to animal allergens Candidate is subject to atmospheric conditions that would require the usage of a respirator, requiring a medical clearance Candidate would be working in or have the potential for exposure to high noise levels for extended period of time. This may require a medical clearance and enrollment into the Hearing Conservation Program Candidate is subject to the following environmental conditions such as working outdoors, high humidity areas indoors, dampness and chilling, dry atmospheric conditions, etc. as part of the job Employment Type: Full Time
