The School of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Director of the UW Resident & Fellow Wellness Service. The Director of the UW Resident & Fellow Wellness Service is responsible for developing and implementing programs that support a positive learning environment for residents and fellows, and improve the quality of life for our residents, fellows and their families. The Director also provides counseling, therapy and referral services for residents, fellows and others dealing with specific concerns such as depression and suicidality, anxiety, stress, burnout, relationship issues including domestic violence, grief/loss, chemical dependency, and interpersonal conflicts. The Director is a member of the Graduate Medical Education Office within the University of Washington School of Medicine (UWSOM). The Director works closely with the following individuals/entities: - GME Office, including Wellness Counselors - GME Leadership including Assistant Dean, Associate Dean and Vice Dean - Residency and fellowship Program Directors, Chiefs, and Program Administrators - Chair (and Emeritus Chair) of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences - Washington Physician's Health Program (WPHP) - Consulting psychiatrist and others, Learning Specialist(s) and Community Provider(s) PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES Clinical Responsibilities: Manage the resident and fellow counseling service and provide mental health assessments and treatment, advocacy, and referrals for residents and fellows who seek services or who are referred by program directors or others. This includes referrals to community providers such as WPHP, community-based psychiatrists and psychotherapists, and others. Consult with program directors, at their request, regarding residents or fellows who raise behavioral and/or performance concerns. Administrative Responsibilities: Provide administrative oversight of the GME Wellness Service. Ensure adherence to practice and documentation standards. Maintain referral network of community providers in Seattle and Boise, including individuals within that network with interest and skills in serving diverse populations. Maintain and report utilization data. Advocate for additional resources as required. Supervise two Wellness Counselors and coordinate all activities with them. Act as primary liaison to consulting psychiatrist, learning specialist, and other contracted mental health providers. Arrange monthly consults, ensure bills are submitted and paid in a timely manner. Partner with the GME Office Leadership to develop, lead and monitor initiatives related to ACGME requirements regarding resident and fellow well-being, including the Clinical Learning Environment Review focus areas. Evaluate and evolve the Wellness Service. Areas of priority include: - Partnering within undergraduate medical education and elsewhere within the system to better unify the clinical learning environment and align initiatives with University needs and trends - Enhancing outreach efforts, including focus on supporting underrepresented minority residents and fellows - Identify new opportunities such as grants, new programs, offerings, relationships and liaising with wellness groups at other sponsoring institutions Provide educational outreach to programs to enhance resident & fellow wellbeing. This may include giving presentations, creating newsletters, and participating in orientations, trainings and conferences. Provide education and training regarding psychological and social factors affecting residents' and fellows' academic performance. Liaise and partner with other wellness-focused entities within the UWSOM, including Assistant Dean for Faculty Wellness and Medical Student Counseling Service to develop a comprehensive strategy to support the well-being of the clinical care team. Identify and alert GME Leadership of departmental trends and GME-related systems and processes that may impede resident and fellow well-being. 55Program Development In collaboration with the Wellness Counselors, develop and coordinate wellness activities throughout the academic year for the purpose of building community among the residents, fellows, and their families Other duties as requested. Reporting Relationships The Director reports to the Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education. Clinical consultation is provided through the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Clinical consultation may also occur with the Washington Physician's Health Program, Eating Disorder Programs, the other Wellness Counselors, GME's consulting psychiatrist, and with the Medical Student Counselors. REQUIREMENTS Master's in Social Work, Counseling or Psychology. Licensure as a mental health professional (LICSW, LMHC) by the Washington State Department of Health. Four plus years' experience in: - Assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health disorders including suicidality, behavior disorders, and post-partum depression. - Strong oral and written communication skills are essential. - Ability to work independently with a high degree of reliability, accuracy and productivity. - Ability to handle confidential information responsibly. - Experience and comfort working with victims of interpersonal violence, with racially and ethnically diverse populations, and with LGBTQ clients. - Familiarity and practical experience working with models of time-limited and evidence-based psychotherapy. DESIRED REQUIREMENTS Practice in medical education or other higher education setting. Management and supervisory experience and formal education in diversity and inclusion.
