Founded in 1925, ATCC is a non-profit organization with a mission to acquire, authenticate, preserve, develop, standardize, and distribute biological materials and information for the advancement and application of scientific knowledge. The Director, R&D, Microbiology directly supports the development, coordination, execution and management of microbiology product development within ATCC. This includes development and refinement of strategy based on market knowledge, intellectual property and internal capabilities. The incumbent is also accountable for identification of new areas for microbiology product development. The Director, micro R&D will work cross-functionally to ensure that product development goals are delivered to specification within agreed upon time-frames and budget and will develop and manage the micro R&D expense budget. In addition, this position will seek out and foster external scientific and business relationships that will further organizational goals. This position will also serve as an internal champion for innovation in science and technology. The Director, Microbiology R&D is responsible for hiring, developing, mentoring and managing R&D staff and for actively supporting, complying with and enforcing all ATCC corporate policies and procedures. This position must work and think independently; duties of this position are to be completed under general administrative guidance. Decision making is a key component of this position, and decisions have a significant impact on the overall success of the Organization. Functions are to be completed in a timely manner with acceptable quality. Responsibilities Develops, plans, and executes R&D strategies that will enable ATCC to deliver against the Corporate Goals. Actively identifies and pursues new areas for microbiology product and technology development utilizing organic and inorganic means. Demonstrates leadership and sound judgement in recruiting, managing, and motivating staff and other resources to ensure that approved R&D projects are efficiently executed and are delivered on time. Serves as the primary interface between the microbiology R&D team and the legal/licensing team on issues such as freedom to operate, patent-ability and in-licensed technologies. Monitors relevant markets and external technologies and develops plans on how to best apply these to further ATCC goals. This may include identification and evaluation of partnering or M&A opportunities. Communicates pertinent corporate information to their team and ensures high quality, rigorous scientific and safety standards are upheld Communicates issues to management appropriately and in a timely manner to ensure time-lines, budget and goals are consistently met. Develops and implements workforce plans to ensure achievement of annual program and budget goals and objectives and maintenance of quality levels including ISO 9001. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations' policies and applicable laws. Has authority either directly or through recommendations for employment decision to include selection, training, performance evaluations, counseling, promotions and terminations. Embraces the ATCC Mission, directives and corporate goals. Qualifications Education and Experience: Doctoral degree, or equivalent, in microbiology is required. A minimum of 15 years of lab related experience including at least 5 years of industry experience in product development is required with a demonstrated history of increasing responsibilities and accountabilities. Additional years of industry experience are highly preferred. A minimum of five years' demonstrated experience in people management including direct and team management is required. Experience in product development relating to research products for infectious disease applications is highly desirable as is experience in metagenomics. First-hand experience participating in and managing full cycle product development programs in a related industry is desired. Experience in an ISO accredited and matrix organization is preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated ability to think strategically, innovative and creatively and to problem solve and exercise sound scientific and business judgment. Creativity in use of broad scientific knowledge to solve a wide array of complex issues. Analytical orientation with demonstrated skill in planning, data-driven decision-making and scientific troubleshooting . Relevant skills in understanding biotechnology patent law and how it relates to product development. Familiarity with product development processes including technology transfer to operations. Knowledge of departmental budgets. Proven ability to effectively manage up and down, apply discretion, maintain confidences and demonstrate organizational savvy. Solid personnel management, coaching, delegating and evaluation skills. Familiarity with ISO standards such as 9001. Strong leadership and organizational development skills. Strong commitment to excellence and a passion for cultivating strong cross-functional relationships and championing business growth. Self-starter, motivated and takes initiative; strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills, able to work collaboratively with all levels of staff to resolve problems and external partners to maximize performance, creativity, problem solving and results. Position-relevant computer experience including Microsoft Office. Ability to travel including international travel (less than 10%).
