The George Mason University Department of Sociology and Anthropology invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in environmental archaeology (geographic area open), to begin August 25, 2020 (teaching load is 2:2). George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of diversity and excellence among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.

Responsibilities: The successful applicant must have teaching experience and a Ph.D. in-hand at the time of application. All applicants are expected to demonstrate a productive research and publication trajectory as well as a record of extramural funding.

Required Qualifications: The Anthropology Program seeks an environmental archaeologist with one or more of the following areas of interest: climate change, diet, resilience and adaptability, transformation and collapse, and cultural resilience including areas surrounding the integration of socioecological systems with the ritual and symbolic domains of past lifeways. Excellence in fieldwork and laboratory skills is required. The capacity to teach a large, upper-division undergraduate course on the prehistory and history of climate change and introductory archaeology is expected.

Preferred Qualifications: We prefer candidates focused on hunter-gatherers or nomadic pastoralists, but outstanding candidates working across geographic and subsistence boundaries are encouraged to apply.
