Job Announcement

As part of the Office of Public Affairs Digital Team, develops website and social media content, to include helping plan, publish and maintain countywide digital content; provides website and social media support to departments; helps create educational resources and training courses; helps maintain a suite of metrics; supports emergency communications; and examines new digital content opportunities. Helps residents who use the county website and social media platforms better understand their government, highlights the county's strategic priorities and connects the community with services through many ways, including these responsibilities:
  • Creates relevant, timely and actionable content for many topic areas and countywide issues through lenses of equity, accessibility and inclusion.
  • Designs graphics, edits photos and produces multimedia packages for website, social media and other platforms.
  • Performs regular reviews of county web content to ensure accuracy, timeliness and relevance.
  • Publishes regular updates to county web pages such as topic areas, meeting information and other countywide issues.
  • Drafts and schedules social media content, monitors for mentions, and identifies opportunities for engagement and customer service.
  • Serves as a content resource for departments and countywide issues/campaigns as needed, requested or assigned.
  • Directly assists county departments and offices in publishing content as requested/assigned.
  • Helps with countywide website and social media coordination across all departments and initiatives.
  • Executes content in support of countywide editorial planning and the county's strategic planning initiative.
  • Assists in developing training for publishers and then provides training as necessary or as requested.
  • Supports website and social media metrics reports, tools and systems.
  • Serves as part of a formal or informal Joint Information Center team to support crises, declared emergencies, weather events and other no-notice incidents.
  • Other duties as assigned include providing intranet support; assisting with special events; helping to maintain lists and databases; providing media relations support as needed; and helping to produce materials for other county communications platforms such as email and printed products.


Illustrative Duties

Implements photographic coverage of events;

Makes presentations on behalf of the department to community and by County officials;

Writes proposals in support of departmental goals and projects;

Produces multimedia productions to support the goals of the department (multimedia may include audio, video or online productions);

Implements print production projects;

Serves as a member of the department's communication planning (strategic planning, action planning) team;

Makes public presentations on behalf of department;

Responds to requests for information regarding agency/County programs;

Provides assistance to agency/County staff as to the most effective means of communicating information to the general public, government employees, and other target groups.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Ability to write, edit and design for departmental publications;

Ability to write for multimedia;

Knowledge of photography and planning photography coverage;

Knowledge of appropriate standards and formatting for online media;

Ability to use current computer software and e-mail systems;

Ability to develop or create web sites;

Ability to consult with management and other staff;

Ability to solve problems;

Ability to supervise projects;

Ability to adapt broadly defined policy guidance to specific situations with a minimal amount of supervision;

Ability to work under pressure;

Ability to participate in meaningful interchange of views on matters of critical importance to the County;

Ability to plan and review the work of others;

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with the public, the press, and County employees.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to a bachelor's degree in communication, business administration or a related field, plus three years of progressively responsible experience in communication area of specialization.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

Not applicable.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Three or more years of progressively responsible experience in the area of communications or a related field. Three or more years of experience publishing web content in a professional setting, including using Drupal or other web content management systems. Strong writing and editing skills. Prior working experience in local, state or federal government.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

The appointee to the position must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check.
This position is considered "essential personnel" and will be required to report to work during times designated countywide as approved for unscheduled leave regardless of the emergency situation (i.e., weather, transportation, other disaster).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is generally sedentary. May be required to do some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items up to 25 pounds in weight. Conducts periodic field observations requiring standing, riding and exposure to the elements (weather). All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
