Job Announcement

This position provides child care services at the Fairfax County Employees' Child Care Center (ECCC) for children of Fairfax County Government employees. Plans and provides age-appropriate child care and educational programs for children ages 6 weeks to five years enrolled at ECCC. Develops experiential curriculum and enhances the environment according to children's individualized interests and needs. Follows all program procedures to ensure the health, safety, and accountability of children. Performs developmental screening and assessments. Assists in the preparation of documentation for local agency, state licensing, and national early childhood accreditation standards. Interacts with county staff, citizens and members of the child care community. Duties are performed under the supervision of a Day Care Center Teacher II.

Schedule/Hours: This is a part-time, Monday through Friday, 25 hours per week position. The hours are between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.. Flexible hours are preferred.

Illustrative Duties

  • Plans, coordinates and presents a program of appropriate experiences for older school-age children or children with special needs;
  • Develops systems to safeguard the health and safety of the children;
  • Plans and prepares nutritious daily snacks;
  • Develops room arrangements to facilitate a variety of experiences to meet the needs and interests of the children;
  • Plans activities to involve parents in the center's program;
  • Participates in orientation, staff development sessions and teacher meetings;
  • Writes newsletter articles and prepares a calendar of activities involving a particular group of children;
  • Determines supply and equipment needs for their program.


Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of individual behavior and the growth and development of children and youth, and the impact of group relationships;
  • Knowledge of how cultural patterns, socioeconomic differences and/or physically and mentally handicapping conditions affect the behavior of children;
  • Knowledge of health, safety and first aid methods, and the ability to assume administrative responsibility for assigned areas of a health and safety program;
  • Knowledge of the factors which cause problems in children;
  • Ability to establish warm and supportive relationships with children, on a group and individual basis.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to completion of two years of study and training at an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in early childhood or elementary education, nursing, recreation, or a related field plus one year of related work experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee must complete a criminal background check and a check of the Child Protective Services Registry to the satisfaction of the employer, and get a tuberculosis (TB) test prior to appointment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Early childhood education degree;
  • At least one year of experience teaching infants, toddlers or pre-school children in a child care setting;
  • Experience and/or knowledge of working with children with special needs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
In conjunction with maintaining the room set-up, must be able to move quickly in order to respond to unsafe situations and have enough strength to separate children engaged in an altercation. Ability to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, walk, climb, sit, kneel, crouch, reach, crawl, handle materials with manual dexterity. Ability to utilize keyboard-driven equipment. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds. Ability to participate in all outdoor activities throughout the year including (but not limited to) field trips, pool excursions, hiking, etc.. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
