The Overview
Start your Cybersecurity career with the City of Alexandria! The City's Department of Information Technology Services (ITS) is seeking a Security Analyst II to support the information security team in their efforts to protect, detect, and respond to cyber-attacks. As the Security Analyst II, you will be part of the City's Information Security team. You will work on improving services to maintain compliance with regulatory agencies, analyzing security data and taking appropriate remediation steps, and working security tools to find gaps and risks within the City's technology infrastructure. The ideal candidate will demonstrate both technical skills and an understanding of typical business operations.

The Opportunity
The Security Analyst II will provide a variety of services to the City in support of the Information Security Program:
  • Supporting the rework of information security requirements and ensuring that those requirements are built into the design, procurement, configuration and deployment of projects and programs.
  • Assist with ensuring compliance with regulatory mandates such as Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS), Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and others.
  • Assist City departments to identify security requirements, measure risk, and conduct assessments. This includes, but is not limited to, business system analysis, communications, implementing functional and technical security controls, and performing risk assessments.
  • Assist with day-to-day information security operations which includes responding to or detecting events, and drafting documentation related to procedures, security reviews, and policy recommendations.
  • Collaborate with all staff to ensure that security risks are addressed throughout the lifecycle of all City systems.
  • Attend applicable training sessions, conduct research, and provide sound recommendations to improve security processes and procedures.
  • Communicate with and educates other ITS teams (infrastructure, networking, and server) on best practices for securing the network. Keep the environment modernized by supporting the completion of the ITS strategic objectives.
  • Monitor City programs and processes to ensure compliance with security protocols and contractual requirements.
  • Assist in execution of the security awareness training program, national cybersecurity awareness month initiatives, and other security outreach programs.
  • Controlling data classification and data lifecycle management tasks to reduce risk to City data.
  • Working on City modernization efforts in accordance with the ITS Strategic Plan.
  • Participating in the computer security incident response team (CSIRT) from the discovery phase through to conclusion and recommending corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
  • Executing on our Identity and Access Management (IAM) Strategy.
  • Brief the Chief Information Security Officer and other executive leadership on any current security issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

About the Department
The Information Technology Services (ITS) Department is responsible for enterprise technology operations for the City of Alexandria. ITS provides technology services and solutions to City departments to enhance service delivery and aligns its work with City needs by providing leadership, resources, expertise, and products that enable departments to better serve the City's residents, businesses, and visitors. All resources support initiatives funded through the multi-year Information Technology Capital Improvement Plan (IT/CIP) to improve the overall technology landscape. The City of Alexandria's ITS Department has been a Top Ten National Finalist in the Digital Cities Award program for the past 13 consecutive years.

Minimum Requirements
A bachelor's degree or four years of relevant work experience; at least three (3) years of experience as a Computer Programmer Analyst I, or equivalent level and completion of advanced courses in computer science, information technology, or a related field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred candidates will have a bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics or related subjects; strong technical background in both Linux and Windows; working knowledge of information and data security; risk assessment experience, especially in multi-month projects; vulnerability assessment and remediation experience; networking experience, especially with firewalls; experience with analyzing Security Information Event Management (SIEM) data, and engineering solutions within SIEMs; industry-recognized security certifications (e.g. CEH, Security+, CISSP); experience in the public sector.
