Overview
In pursuit of service excellence, the Part-time Out of School Time Recreation Leader III performs advanced-level recreation work. A Recreation Leader III will act as a Site Supervisor at an Out of School Time Program location. The Recreation Leader III will plan and initiate programs and activities for youth 5-17 years old from all backgrounds in arts and crafts, sports, games, music, drama, cooking, exercise and field trips. An incumbent in this class may provide supervision to a small number of subordinate staff. Our Recreation Leader III should be available to work 30 hours per week; Monday - Friday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. (September - June) and various hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (July and August); in addition to, some evenings and weekends throughout the year. Enthusiasm, flexibility and excellent communication skills are needed to be successful in this position.

The Opportunity
  • Plans, organize and develops sport and recreation programs including drama, music, dancing, and arts and crafts in order to ensure that activities and events are made available to the community;
  • Makes preparation for recreational activities at one or more sites on a particular date: opens site, sets up equipment, assures that officials and teams are there, ascertains that rules and regulations are followed, controls the crowd, stores equipment, and secures the site;
  • Assist in the operation and record keeping for on-site lunch/snack programs for youth participants;
  • Performs operational functions such as record keeping, program registration, attendance, and cash handling;
  • Communicates with supervisors, co-workers, and citizens via emails, letters and phone conversations;
  • Manages and prioritizes multiple tasks and assignments;
  • Attends to sick and injured children, fills out incident/illness report forms and contact parents as needed;
  • Participates in staff meetings, in-service training, and workshops;
  • Ensures all safety precautions and guidelines are followed;
  • Performs related work as required.

The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities received national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). National accreditation requires park and recreation agencies to meet 155 standards representing elements of effective and efficient park and recreation operations.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

High School Diploma or GED; one year of experience as a Recreation Leader II, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. First Aid training, valid driver's license issued by state of residence.

Preferred Qualifications

Two-Year college degree; experience working independently and/or as a part of a team, Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills, good customer service skills, excellent organizational skills with attention to detail, good knowledge of computers, and good communication skills.
