Summary

About the Position: This position is located at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, General Internal Medicine Service, Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine Division, located in Bethesda, MD. Tour of duty can include weekend on-call duty. Applicants should be available to work on any shift, weekends, holidays, etc.
Board Certification in Geriatrics is highly preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as subject matter expert and consultant on Geriatric Medicine.
  • Provides patient care in the ambulatory as well as the inpatient setting.
  • Provides both primary geriatric and consultative geriatric care.
  • Exams, diagnoses, prescribes courses of treatment and/or attempts to prevent diseases of the elderly.
  • Provides psychosocial and therapeutic support to patients and families.
  • Contributes to the teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows.
  • Trains medical residents in internal medicine, as well as residents in other specialties, in aspects of internal medicine.
  • Participates in team-based quality improvement, case review and patient/customer satisfaction initiatives.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • Two year trial/probationary period may be required.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual season influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempt for medical or religious reasons.
  • This position is covered by the Department of Defense Civilian Employee Drug-Free Workplace Program as a Testing Designated Position (TDP). You must undergo an initial urinalysis screening and then you will be subject to random screenings.
  • This position requires the incumbent to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and a Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirements:
Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic Colleges Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association; or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was earned. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts with your application package.)
OR
A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school, provided that the education and medical knowledge is equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed pre-medical education in the United States and graduate education in foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. (Note: You must attach proof of foreign equivalency with your application package.)

In addition to the education requirement qualified applicant must also have:
Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least one year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a one-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training.
AND
Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, applicants must have 5 years of graduate training or equivalent experience, including a 3 year residency in General Medicine, Family Practice, or Internal Medicine and a 1 year fellowship in Geriatric Medicine or Geriatric Psychiatry. (Note: You must attach proof of graduate training program completion with your application package.)
Examples of qualifying graduate training/experience: 3 year residency in Internal Medicine, 1 year fellowship in Geriatric Medicine or Geriatric Psychiatry, and at least 1 year of experience working in Geriatrics for a total of a at least 5 years graduate training/experience. 3 year residency in General Medicine, 1 year residency or internship in Family Practice, and 1 year fellowship in Geriatric Medicine or Geriatric Psychiatry.

Licensure: Applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
