Summary

The Office of Protection Services (AOP) ensures the safety and security of employees, visitors and the objects entrusted to the Gallery, while allowing for the appropriate level of public access to Gallery resources. The purpose of the position is to assist Gallery visitors and staff by offering exceptional customer service and treating all staff and visitors in a respectful, courteous, tactful and professional manner in line with the Gallery's Standards of Excellence.

Responsibilities

The incumbent will:
  • Greet groups and individual visitors as they enter Gallery property.
  • Remain available to assist and guide visitors.
  • Assist visitors with questions or special needs.
  • Keep abreast of the calendar of events, films and tours in order to serve visitors with questions.
  • Check coats and other personal items in checkrooms.
  • Rotate to relieve other aides in their duties.
  • Inform visitors of policies such as backpacks, flash photography and checking restricted items.
  • Enforce and communicate the visitor policy in designated parts of the Gallery.

The position requires standing for extended periods of time, up to 2½ hours without a break, both inside the Gallery and outside in the Sculpture Garden. Incumbent will be required to ascend and descend stairs. Lifting of visitor bags or packages that may weigh up to 20 lbs. may be required. Incumbent will screen large items and/or luggage by using an X-Ray machine. Position requires wearing of a radio earpiece and carrying a portable radio, for up to an entire shift.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for GS-1016-4. This requires 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience serving as a security officer responsible for protecting property, enforcing law and order, preserving the peace, preventing crime, and detecting and investigating violations of the law within and on the perimeters of the organization.

Those applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be evaluated against these factors to determine the best-qualified candidates.
  • Ability to provide assistance to visitors, the general public and staff within buildings and facilities.
  • Skill in oral communication with a wide variety of individuals, to provide directions and general information.

    2. DD214 - Member Copy 4 is required to confirm a candidate's entitlement to veteran's preference.
