Responsibilities

The Education Program Specialist in the Central Office is responsible for coordinating education, recreation, and related programs at the institution, regional, national, and Central Office levels, and recommends program objectives, plans, innovative and motivational techniques, and testing methods.

Incumbent assists and initiates the development of Bureau policies and programs as they relate to effective programs which may include such areas as literacy, special learning needs, adult education, occupational education, English as a second language, recreation, leisure time activities, inmate wellness, special projects, reentry, and related activities.

In addition, the incumbent serves as liaison with both internal and external contacts, public, and other entities, and must maintain effective communication, in order to keep current on the status of accomplishments and developing activities throughout the academic and professional community and the prison systems at the local, state, and federal levels.

Qualifications

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following:

Basic Requirements:

A. Degree: that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience - courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described in A above.

Education

There is no substitution of education for specialized experience for this position.

Experience

At least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level. To be creditable, this experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular qualifications to perform successfully the duties of the position, and must typically be in or related to the position to be filled.

Some examples of this qualifying experience are:
  • Experience in developing policies and programs, providing expert advice in area of specialty and providing guidance, direction, supervision, advice and/or evaluation for a program.
  • Experience in addressing learning styles and accommodations for students with special learning needs.
  • Experience in developing assessment instruments to measure program performance and preparing related reports to summarize results.
  • Experience in developing procedures to maintain budget performance.

Credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience. To receive proper credit, you must show the actual time (such as the number of hours worked per week) spent in activities.

The representative rate for this position is $109,088 per annum ($52.27 per hour).

Special Conditions of Employment Section:

The incumbent is subject to geographic relocation to meet the needs of the agency.

Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a urinalysis, physical, and background investigation. All applicants are subject to National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and credit checks.
