Summary

Performs the work of a Journeyman Locksmith and Carpenter and basic knowledge of Masonry and Painter work involved in the maintenance, repair, construction, alteration and modification of building structures throughout the Medical Center.

Responsibilities

Work includes, but is not limited to the following: Design, layout and construction of walls using wood or metal studs. Cutting and installing drywall to include taping and mudding. Choosing proper material to match existing wall finish then installing the wall finishing including ceramic tile, wall paneling, paint, laminate, wallpaper and vinyl. Preparing and installing insulation and wall moisture barriers. Constructing and repairing walls such as; fire walls, smoke walls, masonry walls, load bearing walls, room dividers and partitions. Shoring up walls in some cases due to extensive damage. Preparing and installing wall supports for heavy items to be hung on the wall, then installing such items, such as television mounts, monitors, plaques, signs, etc. Installs and maintains handrails, wall trim and moldings, bumper guards, etc. Installs and repairs exterior wall systems such as vinyl siding, T-111 siding, shiplap siding, etc.

Performs layout of floors including the construction and installation of, joists and joist supports, timbers, subfloors, underlayment and finished floors such as hardwood, resilient tile, ceramic tile, carpet, linoleum, etc., per drawings or blueprints. Tears up and repairs existing damaged floors and floor structures. Installs supports for anchoring of heavy items with extreme sheer potentials. Installs floor moisture barriers. Installs bridging for settling of buildings.

Installs doors and frames including wood and metal, complete with all types of door hardware assemblies. Installs fire doors in accordance with JCAHO and OSHA standards. Provides finish to doors including sand and sealer, stain and paint. Cuts and installs doors to allow for windows and vents. Installs, modifies and repairs door closure assemblies, hold open devices and panic hardware. Constructs and installs flood gates for foul weather. Installs and repairs storm doors.

Installs window units. Repairs and installs window hardware such as sash cords, locks, etc. Removes, cuts and replaces glass. Removes and replaces window glazing and weather seals. Installs and repairs window shades, venetian blinds and awnings. Provides for moisture proofing, weather stripping and caulking.

Installs and repairs various types of acoustical ceiling systems, suspended ceiling systems, plaster ceilings and sheetrock systems. Cuts and installs access doors in plaster and sheetrock ceilings per drawings or blueprints. Assists other professional trades such as Electrical and Mechanical, in the mounting and installation of equipment. Makes repairs to ceilings to match existing finish.

Constructs and makes repairs to roofs, roofdecks, and performs internal and external building trim work. Installs rafters and repairs sheathing, underlayment and finished roof systems. Constructs, installs and repairs roof openings such as dormers, hatches, etc. Constructs and repairs catwalks for flat roofs. Installs soffits, fashia boards and vents. Boards dormers, vents and windows as necessary for hurricane preparation per emergency and disaster plan.

Constructs cabinets, shelving, laminates etc. Fabricates, installs and repairs countertops. Repairs furnishings of all types and installs protective coverings such as formica. Cuts and installs finished carpentry materials such as wall, ceiling and floor moldings including both interior and exterior building trim. Makes picture frames and shadow boxes.

Minor masonry work including mixing, pouring and finishing mortar, plaster, pro rock, level lastic and epoxy based concrete including the construction of forms for placing concrete. Minor work involving laying bricks and concrete block and installing reinforcement. Patching and repairing masonry walls, floors and ceilings. Frames and installs plaster including base and finished coats. Drills and installs different types of anchors to accommodate the type of masonry.

With regard to painting;work includes surface preparation, including spackling and sanding, priming, intermediate and finish coatings of interior walls, ceilings, floors and trim. Performs minor exterior painting of buildings, parking lots, signs, curbs, streets, etc. as necessary including cornices, facia boards, columns and windows. Paint is applied to various surfaces such as wood, metal, concrete, brick and parking lines. Sets up as necessary, scaffolding or prefabricated staging to facilitate painting job. Applies coating materials such as paint, varnishes, and shellacs with brushes, rollers, spray guns and other related methods and techniques. While preparing for the painting process, incumbent must distinguish between oil and latex paints with regard to MSDS regulations. Cleans up using paint thinners, urethane, etc.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to perform duties of a LOCKSMITH without more than normal supervision as demonstrated by 1) Perform a full repair cycle of locating malfunction, disassembly, repair, cleaning, reassembly, and reinstallation of a wide variety of commercially manufactured locking devices. 2) Determine the work sequence and select hand and power tools (e.g. files, picks, tweezers, tension wrenches, grinders, buffers, stamping machines, electric drills, soldering, irons, brazing torches, bench lathes and drill presses) to repair locking mechanisms. 3) Plan techniques to be used and apply judgement in the selection of tools and accepted trade practices to troubleshoot and neutralize locks according to appropriate guidelines, manufacturer drawings, diagrams, and technical manuals.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements. Heavy physical efforts are required. Must be able to lift heavy objects, walk, bend, stoop, climb, crawl and stand on feet for extended periods of time. Must be able to work in tight and restrictive spaces such as under buildings, under equipment, in attics, in tunnels, etc., and at high elevations such as on roofs, scaffolds, ladders, in towers, etc., in excess of 30 feet.

Working Conditions. Must be able to work under stressful conditions typical to the hospital environment. Must work in confined and poorly ventilated areas, both inside and outside. Subject to working in all types of weather including inclement weather as employee is deemed essential to the vital function of the hospital. Subject to various conditions that may result in burns, abrasions, cuts, and working in areas that are hot, cold, damp, dusty, dirty and potential for coming into contact with contaminated articles. Subject to possible injuries from falling off of ladders, scaffolds, etc. Required to wear all personal protective equipment assigned to him as each situation warrants, such as eye, hearing, head, feet and respiration protective devices.
