Summary

The Physician, Medical Director Respiratory Care is part of the Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine section in the Department of Medicine located at the Washington, DC VA Medical Center. The Section of Pulmonary & Critical Care is an integral component of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at George Washington University (GWU) Hospital, Washington DC with responsibility for teaching fellows, residents and medical students.

Responsibilities

Major Duties:
  • Clinical Care of patients in the Medical Intensive Care Unit, including participation with department call schedule including weekends.
  • Develop and maintain an ambulatory pulmonary medicine practice.
  • Provide Pulmonary and Critical Care consultations in the inpatient and outpatient context.
  • Perform Pulmonary and Critical Care medicine procedures.
  • Interpret pulmonary function tests, including cardiopulmonary exercise tests.
  • Complete all Medical Record documentation requirements as specified in the Medical Staff Rules and Regulations on a concurrent basis.
  • Provide clinical guidance over the phone, by Secure Messaging and through the mail.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of medical assessments and observations.
  • Supervise and instruct Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine fellows, Internal Medicine residents, and medical students, on Critical Care Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine Services.
  • Serve as faculty attending and cover ICU team consisting of a fellow, medical residents, and medical students, including daily teaching and work rounds.
  • Develop, implement, accomplish, & monitor goals for Pulmonary education and Critical Care medicine.
  • Assist in the review and updating of the Pulmonary and Critical Care curriculum as needed.
  • Provide 6 to 8 core curriculum lectures per year in the areas of Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine for the GWU Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellow education program.
  • Serve on DC VA Medical Center department and hospital committees as requested by the division chief.
  • Maintain an academic affiliation with the GWU Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep, and Medicine of the Department of Medicine.
  • Ensure that performance measure and standard of care are met by the respiratory care service as well as oversee day-to-day operations.
  • Implement a plan for improving respiratory care services including developing & improving on existing protocols, health quality measures and clinical outcomes.
  • Supervise the care of home oxygen and home ventilator patients.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/13/2019.
Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.
Preferred Experience:
  • Prior experience in leading respiratory therapy services.
  • Board certification in Pulmonary and Critical Care medicine.
  • Training and experience in advanced interventional pulmonary procedures.
  • Training and experience in managing difficult asthma and/or pulmonary hypertension.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: In the process of providing patient care, the work involves regular and recurring periods of walking, standing, sitting, bending, pulling, lifting, reaching and carrying. Manual dexterity is required to operate medical equipment and perform activities such as pulmonary and critical care procedures, treatments and computerized medical record documentation.

Education

Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP): Authorized
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursement program within VHA. If selected for this position you must meet specific individual eligibility criteria in accordance with VHA policy 1021 and apply for EDRP within four (4) months of appointment. Final award amount and program start date is determined after review of a complete EDRP application and supporting documentation by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office. If selected for this position, please contact the local EDRP Coordinator.
