Associate Director

The George Mason University Law Library invites well-qualified applicants for the position of Associate Director located on the Arlington campus. Responsibilities: The Associate Director assists the Associate Dean for Library & Technology in the general administration of the library, including preparation of budgets, management of personnel, and the development and implementation of long-range plans. The Associate Director is responsible for administration of all facets of day-to-day public services operations, including circulation, reference, interlibrary loan, collection maintenance, instructional services, and the use of information instruction technologies. The Associate Director is in charge of the library in the absence of the Associate Dean for Library & Technology.

Duties: 1. Train, supervise, and evaluate all public services personnel, which includes the Reference Librarian, the Research Services Librarian, the Reference & Outreach Librarian, the Reference & Faculty Services Librarian, the Research Services Specialist, the Circulation Manager, and part-time wages and student circulation assistants. 2. Train, supervise and evaluate the library Administrative Assistant. 3. Oversee day-to-day operations of library public services, including circulation, reference, interlibrary loan, collection maintenance, and instructional services. Coordinate departmental projects and initiatives. 4. Serve on the Collection Development Committee with other professional librarians to evaluate, update and implement collection development policies, and identify titles for selection, cancellation, and weeding. 5. Provide direct liaison support to law school faculty, including assistance in the use of print and electronic resources, preparation of bibliographies, and facilitation of interlibrary and document delivery. 6. Teach legal research as part of the two-year LRWA program, including instruction in both print and electronic resources. Participate in other bibliographic instruction classes including substantive law classes, orientation, and library tours. Participate in LexisNexis, Westlaw, and Bloomberg Law training. 7. Serve as Human Resources Liaison for the law library. Coordinate recruitment and orientation of all new classified staff and administrative faculty through eWork. Approve all wage and work-study hiring in Banner HR. 8. Coordinate all public services statistics for reporting purposes to accrediting organizations. 9. Approve and monitor non-book purchases on eVA and Bank of America. 10. Oversee all facilities and housekeeping issues. 11. Participate in professional development activities, library committees, law school, and university activities. 12. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications: Required: JD from an ABA-accredited law school and MLS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited school. Five years of law library experience with a record of increasing administrative responsibility. Demonstrated supervisory and organizational abilities. Substantial knowledge of legal bibliography and legal research techniques in both print and electronic formats. Experience teaching legal research using both print and electronic resources. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong service orientation, and the ability to work flexibly with law faculty, students, staff and a diverse legal research community. Knowledge of current law librarianship trends. Familiarity with current technology used in legal education and practice.
