Summary

Participates with other specialists in the planning and design phase of electrical and electronic projects. Day-to-day assignments are performed independently and involve fabrication, installation, repair, maintenance, troubleshooting and overhaul of electrical/electronic equipment, controls and systems. Responsibilities

  • Serves as a member of an assigned project team established to identify projects requiring major electrical/electronic installation, repair, upgrade, maintenance, etc.
  • Independently comments on the electrical features detailed in blueprints outlining major projects.
  • Determines if proposals meet agency requirements (includes analysis of design and performance characteristics).
  • Works with Electrical Engineers (when available) or independently in the development of drawings and specifications and in coordinating detailed electrical projects.
  • Conducts site surveys and provides comments to engineers and officials on the accuracy of electrical plans in meeting desired objectives.
  • Compares results with final schematics and recommends modifications is necessary.
  • Fabricates, installs, maintains, troubleshoots, repairs and modifies unique and/or specialized electronic and electrical equipment and operational systems in support of SSA's critical operational and computer needs.
  • Equipment and systems include electrical/electronic distribution systems and electronic controlled load sensing banks.
  • Performs complete electrical wiring or rewiring jobs for segments of buildings and structures.
  • Installs, repairs and maintains switch and outlet boxes.
  • Connects completed electrical circuits to power source and tests operation of metering equipment and fuse disconnects.
  • Work often includes installation of cables and fabrication of circuits designed to accomplish multiple functions where one function impedes the operations of other related components.
  • Maintenance and repair problems require interpretation of a variety of electrical/electronic data and use of independent judgement in determining work sequence and selecting and using proper tools.
  • Work is performed under hot conditions on a variety of aged buildings at the Woodlawn Headquarters, requiring significant electrical/electronic modifications to both equipment and facilities.

To qualify for this position, you must have:

Ability to Do the Work of this Position Without More Than Normal Supervision

This is the OPM-required Screen Out Element and means you must demonstrate the following worker-traits in the performance of ELECTRICIAN duties:

Knowledge of Electrical Equipment - at a minimum, must be able to install, operate, maintain, troubleshoot and repair electrical equipment under not-more-than normal supervision.

Theory and Instruments - at a minimum, must have sufficient knowledge of electrical theory and ability to properly use electrical instruments under not-more-than normal supervision.

Technical Practices - at a minimum, must be able to apply required trade practices to perform common electrical work under not-more-than normal supervision.

Ability to Use Electrical Drawings - at a minimum, must be able to read electrical drawings and perform common electrical work under not-more-than normal supervision .

Ability to Use and Maintain Hand Tools - at a minimum, must be able to use hand-tools of the electrical trade to perform common electrical work under not-more-than normal supervision .

Troubleshooting (Electrical) - at a minimum, must be able to apply troubleshooting techniques of the electrical trade to perform common inspections and testing of electrical systems under not-more-than normal supervision .

This position also requires that applicants be willing and able to comply with the following:

Physical Efforts: Work is performed on ladders, scaffolds and platforms and involves extensive standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Lifts and carries equipment and tools over 40 lbs.

Working Conditions: Work is usually performed indoors where light, heat and ventilation are adequate. However, some work is conducted outside in all types of weather. Electricians may also be required to work in areas where ventilation, heating and cooling equipment has been shut off. Electricians are subject to injury, such as electric shock, cuts, bruises, falls and burns. Work may require exposure to high noise levels.

Protective Gear: Electricians are required to wear safety shoes and glasses and, when necessary and/or as directed, goggles and gloves. Additionally, electricians are required to wear a respirator on an as needed basis.

Other Requirements: Electricians in this position must have a valid driver's license and may occasionally operate a government vehicle. Additionally, electricians may be required to report for duty or continue in a duty status during emergencies.
