Responsibilities

This position is located at the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia. The Maintenance Zone Worker performs daily rounds of all areas assigned and examines the nursing logbooks and talks with nurses and other professional staff concerning current problems and those noted during the previous evening, night, and weekend shifts. Takes action to correct problems that are found during rounds and those identified by other staff. Must be able to recognize potential safety problems while rounding and be prepared to correct the problem or refer to Supervisory or Safety Manager for action from a more appropriate source. Must be able to analyze the cause of apparent problems and determine if repair is required or if operator error or misapplications are responsible.

Major Duties and Responsibilities Include :

-Carpentry (30%)- Repairs and maintains wooden structures such as furniture, railing, shelves, doors, bulletin boards, etc. Repairs cabinet and locker doors to include hardware, locks, tracks, etc. Installs and replaces ceiling tiles, bumper rails, hand rails, corner guards, cove base, and other parts of building using hand and power tools.

-Plumbing (25%)- Makes repairs and may perform some installation of existing utilities and disposal systems. Inspects, repairs, and replaces fittings and plumbing fixtures to maintain water and drainage systems. Repairs flush valves, faucets, showers, vacuum breakers, or other leaky valves, water closets, etc.

-Electrical (20%)- Inspects and tests electrical lighting, power circuits, and ballast transformers, and other simple elements of electrical systems, fixtures, and appliances. Renews circuits either by isolation and cutting out defective wiring and replacing it with new wiring, or by slicing ends of broken wires.

-Painting (15%)- Apply coating materials so surfaces are free from skips, runs, and drips. Sand, wire brush, scrape, spackle, and putty surfaces. Brush out, roll on, and spray coating materials as well as applying other related methods and techniques.

-Air Conditioning (10%)- Installs, repairs, modifies, and performs preventive maintenance on most heating, ventilation, A/C, and refrigeration equipment. Replaces and repairs thermostats, adjusts temperature setting, cleans and replaces filters, repairs and adjusts Variable Air Volume (VAV) boxes, makes minor repairs to ice machines, etc.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbent will be required to lift, carry, push or pull a variety of materials and equipment such as fixtures, tools, ladders and testing equipment. Will be required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel and crouch to make necessary repairs. Incumbent usually work indoors; however, he/she may be occasionally exposed to a variety of weather conditions, both in winter and summer, in making repairs and installations on external work sites. Many work sites are dirty, dusty, greasy, poorly lit, cramped and with unpleasant odors.
