Responsibilities

The incumbent will develops a research project with an emphasis on small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and tagging-scheme. Working with polarized neutron beams and x-rays. Synthesizing biological macromolecules including peptides and protein particles and establishing biochemical attachment protocols. Participate in SANS experiments and data analysis. Present and publish results in scientific conferences and in the literature.

Occasional travel - To conferences, meetings and training.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

A. Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to the above basic requirements: All applicants must have one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the GS-9 level (ZP-II at NIST). Specialized experience is defined as experience involving functionalization of surfaces for biomedical applications, molecular biochemical experimental techniques, and nanoparticle synthesis.

Master's or equivalent graduate degree

Combination of education and experience.

This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates.

A one year trial period may be required.

This appointment may be extended up to four years without further competition.

If the selection results in a temporary promotion, it can be extended not to exceed 5 years or made permanent without further competition.
