Responsibilities

The Maintenance Mechanic (Painter) position is located at the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia. The Maintenance Mechanic duties include, but are not limited to:

-Completes a range of painting, prepping, proper covering and assists other maintenance mechanics with various structural maintenance and repair of facility.

-Prepares areas to be painted using methods such as smoothing (pumice and rottenstone) filling, shaping, and leveling with metal and synthetic resins, and mixing and applying pre-coating agents. Prepares coating materials by tinting, toning, matching, blending and mixing with necessary additives. Preparation includes pre-taping all fixtures and covering all furniture. Completes surface patch and repair if necessary, after removing/relocating any wall mounted items or wall anchors/screws.


-Executes special finishing techniques to include; marbling, graining, and utilizing coating materials to ensure that affected surfaces have a smooth texture, decorative appearance and meet thickness and level requirements.

-Applies coating materials utilizing accepted trade devices such as; brushes, rollers, spray guns and graining tools. Employs tools commonly used by painters and plasterers to include; paint shakers, brushes, rollers, angle trowels, trowels, floats and screeds.

-Plans and organizes materials, selects specific tools and choose to employ techniques needed to complete work requests with little to no advice or oversight.

-Mixes, applies and finishes plaster surfaces for construction areas and also extends this work to the repair of interior walls, ceilings and exterior stucco walls.

-Performs plastering on various types of background to include to include; metal, wood, wallboard, masonry surfaces and stucco.

-Cleans work areas of any debris, dust, supplies, etc. Cleans work area of any paint that may have dripped or splash into the area.


Work Schedule: Monday-Thursday 3:30pm-Midnight and Friday 11:30am-8pm.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: Incumbent must be able to lift and carry fifty (50) pounds. Must be able to constantly climb ladders, walk, and perform light to moderate bending and stooping. During normal day to day operations, individual will be required to perform simple grasping, fine hand manipulation, reaching above shoulder height. Individual is responsible for maintaining and pushing their own paint cart to all assigned areas.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
