GDIT is seeking a Molecular Biologist in support of the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases. Since 1969, USAMRIID has served as the Department of Defense's lead laboratory for medical biological defense research, with the core mission to protect the warfighter from biological threats as well as investigate disease outbreaks and threats to public health. This position will support USAMRIID within the pathology division to conduct research utilizing molecular pathology techniques.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESFunction as a principal investigator focused on applying state-of-the-art molecular pathology and other relevant pathological techniques to elucidate novel functional related pathology research of infectious agentsDevelop innovative research proposals to seek funding for research geared at understanding the molecular basis for infectious diseasesLead and drive publications on high profile manuscripts to help establish scientific leadership for the Pathology DivisionOversee members of the research team in protocols, designing experiments, troubleshooting technical issues, interpreting data, and writing manuscripts. Supervise in the drafting and writing of manuscripts, research proposals and technical reportsWork independently to develop cutting edge molecular biology and other relevant pathological techniques as applied to systems level pathology analysis and provide expertise in techniques, such as immunofluorescence (IF), in situ hybridization (ISH), and other related techniquesDevelop and manage a GLP complaint Molecular Pathology laboratoryDevelop techniques associated with immunohistochemistry and related standard operations procedures (SOPs)Manage the staining of IHC slides, including those for Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and Well-Documented (WD) studies, as neededProvide expertise in super-resolution imaging, confocal imaging, Laser Capture Dissection Microscopy, and other state-of-the-art techniques and employ crosscutting knowledge and expertise in biology (microbiology, biochemistry, virology, bio-informatics, synthetic biology, systems biology, etc.) to develop multidisciplinary research programs for integrated problem solvingExamine, using standard light and confocal microscopy, interpret, and record changes in histological specimens stained by in-situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence slidesWork with pathologists, technicians, and researchers on experimental planning, data analysis, modifying protocols to address scientific or technical obstacles, and troubleshooting problems that may arise in the course of researchPrepare written reports for researchers and pathologists as required for research protocols within established timelines and in accordance with existing Pathology Division and USAMRIID policies and proceduresTrain other members of the research team in research techniques. Provide daily oversight of military, civilian, and contractor technicians working in the Molecular Pathology laboratory within the Pathology Division to ensure work is being performed properly, timely, and efficientlyPresent research findings in scientific forums such as conferences, oral speaking engagements, and in meeting with collaborators; publish experimental data when appropriateProvide Technical POC with regular (ie, weekly) research progress updates or upon request using Microsoft Office based applicationsComplete required job-related training, including GLP training, as necessary in accordance with Pathology Division policies and proceduresAttend on average 1-2 scientific conferences annually in order to obtain continuing education and to ensure cutting edge knowledge and techniques are maintained MSContract requires PhD in Biological Sciences 10+Contract requires:Minimum 5 years experience in an academic and or industry setting in a relevant biological disciplineIn Depth knowledge of molecular biology assaysExtensive experience with Confocal Microscopy, Laser Capture Microdissection Microscopy, Super-resolution Microscopy and other state of the art techniques in relation to infectious disease researchRecord of innovative contributions to high consequence infectious diseases as evidenced by a strong publication record, including first/senior authored publications in top tier journalsProven track record in scientific grant writing for developing innovative research proposals to seek funding for research geared at understanding the molecular basis for infectious diseases For more than 50 years, General Dynamics Information Technology has served as a trusted provider of information technology, systems engineering, training and professional services to customers across federal, state, and local governments, and in the commercial sector.
