Primary Responsibilities: The Repair and Restoration Structural Engineer responsibilities may include: * Perform condition assessments of existing structures including visual survey, field measurements, repair quantity take-offs, etc. with evaluations including but not limited to garages, plazas, facades, and roofs.* Perform field tests during surveys and construction including chain drag and mason's hammer sounding of reinforced concrete for repair layout, water testing, and other non-destructive evaluation (NDE) tests.* Assist with composing condition survey reports including summary of observations, photographic documentation, and repair budget estimate spreadsheet development. Assist with development of corresponding survey drawings indicating repair locations and observation notes.* Assist with writing project specifications and developing bid/permit drawings outlining a repair project scope, repair details, etc.* Perform inspections and observations for reinforced concrete structure repairs including contractor repair layout verification, shoring installation review, post-demolition surface preparation and repair detailing review, reinforcing steel cleaning and supplemental steel placement review, and as-built repair quantity measurement.* During concrete pours, review batch tickets for conformance with approved concrete mix design, test fresh concrete for temperature, slump, and air content, and take cylinder or mortar samples for compressive strength testing. Inspect placement procedures, inspect curing procedures after concrete placement, and coordinate transportation of cylinders and cubes for testing.* Perform inspection and observations of other structural restoration construction work including structural steel, brick masonry, waterproofing, coatings, sealants, flashings, roofing, etc. to confirm compliance with contract documents including specifications, drawings, and approved submittals.* Author field reports with descriptions of observations, list of as-built quantities verified, summary of action items, and photographs for each field visit performed. For concrete pours, provide cylinder test data sheets documenting information related to samples taken.* Assist with structure review, analysis and design services related to existing structure modifications including but not limited to core penetrations, added loading, stair openings or infills, change of property use, or additions. Perform field verification of existing structure conditions for the purposes of the analysis work. Perform finite element modeling and analysis of existing structure using original building structural drawings, data from field review, and available engineering software. Structure types include reinforced concrete (including post-tensioned or pre-stressed), steel, wood, and others.* Design work for modifications to existing structures may include structural strengthening including design of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) systems and use of other strengthening technology.* Assist with other Repair and Restoration services such as due diligence surveys, new construction waterproofing consulting, and building envelope consulting and commissioning services.* Expect significant percentage of work (50%+) to be field work at local project sites primarily within the Washington-Baltimore metropolitan area with isolated out-of-town travel.* Night and weekend work will be required from time to time. Qualifications: * Bachelor of Science with concentration in Structural and/or Civil Engineering with a Master of Science being a plus.* 0 to 5 years of past work experience in the structural engineering and/or building restoration field.* Have current Concrete Level I Technician certification through WACEL or equivalent organization or be able to obtain this certification within 3 months of starting the position with training and support provided by the company.* Must already have or be able to obtain Reinforced Concrete Technician and Structural Concrete Technician certifications through WACEL or equivalent organization within one year of starting the position with training and support provided by the company.* Must be physically able to perform field inspections in a variety of property types, construction sites, and sometimes in challenging conditions/locations. This position will sometimes require the ability to lift ladders, carry hoses and other heavy equipment.* With proper oversight and equipment provided, engineers will climb and move around on roofs, ride swing stages or lifts for facade and building envelope work, access attics and crawlspaces, and access the personal residences or offices of a wide variety of individual building occupants.* Must have a valid driver's license and access to a vehicle.* Must have good writing and verbal communication skills for reports and communication with contractors, clients, colleagues, etc. The SK&A Group is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer.
