Summary

This position is located in the Office of Design & Production (D&P) of the National Portrait Gallery (NPG), Smithsonian Institution (SI). The employee serves as the NPG production manager, coordinating and overseeing the production of exhibitions, and as the primary computer-aided design (CAD) operator for the department.

Responsibilities

  • Produces detailed plans and elevations for exhibition design, fabrication, and installation.
  • Produces fabrication and installation drawings, details and specifications for any changes or installations in exhibition galleries and other museum public spaces.
  • Analyzes projects or exhibitions and determines the tasks, time and resources required to complete them.
  • Develops and maintains master calendar and project schedules.
  • May perform art handling and exhibition construction tasks.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position Specialized experience is defined as designing CAD documents and being heavily involved in all aspects of planning, developing, and installing exhibitions and artworks in a museum setting.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Education: Three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree related to this position may be substituted to meet the experience requirements.

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:
  • Ability to use CAD systems to produce floor plans, elevations, and perspectives that convey design and construction instructions.
  • Ability to produce scale drawings that convey the aesthetic and physical intent of a given design concept.
  • Ability to analyze exhibition tasks to estimate time and materials necessary to complete projects.
  • Ability to coordinate actions on multiple, simultaneous projects to conclude all work within scheduled projects' completion dates.
  • Knowledge of current materials and object handling practices used in exhibition installation to specify appropriate methods for handling, preparing, and presenting objects and their environments.
