Responsibilities

The Salem VA Medical Center is a teaching institution associated with three medical school affiliations. Teaching in supervision is encouraged.

Major duties and responsibilities include:
  • This position involves outpatient and inpatient duties, with possible occasional on call responsibilities, mostly from home and with a PA or resident in-house.
  • Performs psychiatric evaluations for a diverse population of Veterans.
  • Provides a full range of therapeutic interventions including diagnostic assessment, medication evaluation and management, suicide risk assessments, crisis intervention, and overall care of patients with psychiatric disorders.
  • Ensures practice of psychiatric medicine is consistent with TJC, CARF, HIPPA, VA policies and procedures, clinical practice guidelines, national statutes and regulations, medical record documentation, and mandatory continuing education.
  • Provides a full range of psycho-diagnostic services including assessment and the most appropriate psychotherapeutic techniques in providing quality care.
  • The Psychiatrist may serve as a mental health team leader with responsibilities for coordinating consults and triage of specialty clinic referrals.
  • Participates effectively in team meetings and treatment planning conferences, and collaborates with multidisciplinary team members that enhances coordination of comprehensive patient care.
  • Orders diagnostic tests and consultations, and discriminates between normal and abnormal findings and makes appropriate treatment decisions.
  • May participate in supervision and teaching in support of the psychiatric residency program, performs on call duties, and performs other directly related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The individual must qualify to perform duties as a physician, have completed an accredited residency and/or possess experience which has qualified the individual to perform general duties and some specialized functions and procedures without supervision. Staff physicians may also include attendings who train physician residents assigned in facilities with residency training programs, and consultants who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

  • Medical License
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible Psychiatrist

Physical Requirements:
The physical requirements of this position include occasional lifting; prolonged standing and sitting; frequent bending; walking (distance); climbing; reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive); repetitive motion, and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall; reasoning; problem-solving; hearing; speaking clearly; writing legibly; reading; logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes-fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities; frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions; and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes-noisy environment. There may be an occasional need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness, and hazardous materials. In Accordance With VA Directive and Handbook 5019

Additional information

Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases.
