Summary

About the Position: This position is located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Department of Medicine, Dermatology Clinic, located in Bethesda, MD. This position will require 50% travel, between Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and Fort Belvoir Community Hospital.

Responsibilities

  • Performs high complexity testing on skin cancer specimens in order for Mohs surgeons to adequately diagnose patients and prepare for surgical and/or clinical care.
  • Serve as a surgical assistant in the procedure rooms for all types of dermatologic procedures, including but limited to biopsies, excisions, chemical peels, scar revisions, and dermabrasion.
  • Follows Anatomic pathology and Dermatology departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ensures appropriate calibration, cleanliness, and maintenance of all examination and treatment equipment.
  • Applies bandages after surgical procedures and educates patients on post-op wound care.
  • Maintains current laser safety training and assists in laser procedures.
  • Maintains Mohs slides in accordance with Mohs standard operating procedures.
  • Prepares and print schedules for daily appointments, conducts check-in procedures, and records data utilizing automated systems.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting with surgical procedures; communicating with patients and clinicians about medical information; resolve problems through discussion with patients voicing a complaint; and experience with automated healthcare systems such as the Composite Health Care System (CHCS) and Armed Forces Health Longitudinal Technology Application (ALHTA). This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Histology or Clinical Laboratory Science.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
