Education and length of practice will be considered through a formal pay-setting process in determining the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay)

Responsibilities

The Hunter Holmes McGuire, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Richmond, Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University are seeking Board Eligible/Board Certified Hematologist/Oncologist to join the Medical Service Hematology/Oncology Section on clinician-educator track. The successful candidate is expected to be eligible to hold a faculty appointment at the Assistant/Associate Professor level at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine.

The major duties of the position include, but are not limited to:

-Management of acute symptoms/conditions of assigned and unassigned patients.

-Perform initial histories and physical examinations on outpatients.

-Provide ongoing outpatient and follow up of inpatient care for assigned patients.

-Screen outpatients to determine need for further care.

-Review and prescribe medications.

-Order diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms (EKGs).

-Review need for and order health promotion and disease prevention activities.

-Initiate, respond to and expedite requests for consultations, special tests and studies.

-Provide education and counseling to patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and the use of prescribed treatments and drugs.

-Timely documentation (notes and encounter forms) is necessary in all areas in accordance with VA & facility policy.

-Conduct laboratory research after obtaining approvals from the institutional OACUC, IRB, and Biosafety Committees.

- Submit funding applications through the VA office of research or McGuire Research Institiute as deemed necessary.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/30/2019.
Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.
Preferred Experience: Preference will be given to dynamic clinicians with interest in thoracic, GU, liver, and/or plasma cell malignancies. Also,the ideal candidate should have a record of leadership as a clinician, researcher and educator. Knowledge of Joint Commission requirements and that of other accrediting bodies is essential. Research experience is a plus. The ideal candidate must be a skilled interpersonal communicator and have the ability to promote medical staff excellence as well as meet performance measure goals while utilizing the most cost-effective methodology. The candidate should be eligible for academic appointment, and is expected to practice medicine at the Richmond VAMC in his/her field.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of 26 days per leave year (1 day per pay period).
